CHAPTER 4
BECCA
Time was dragging by,and it certainly didn’t help that someone called in at work – again. No, she was answering all sorts of phone calls about a recent software update that had nothing to do with the cell phone contracts she sold, which ended up getting her chewed out more often than not when she had to refer them to open an issue with their provider. The fact that the day was trudging by wasn’t helping things either.
In fact, she was really glad that Travis hadn’t mentioned getting together tonight because she wasn’t in the mood. She wanted food, a hot bath, and maybe a good cry or a glass of wine before collapsing into bed. It was so busy that she never even got a chance to check her cell phone, only to see that she had fifteen text messages.
Hey – we’re grilling next weekend. Are you gonna show up this time?
Becca rolled her eyes at her oldest brother’s text message. Jason was bossy, had little tact, and simply called it like it was. He didn’t believe in sugar-coating things, and maybe that was what bothered her so much. Being told to ‘get to work’ by him was just annoying.
I borrowed your Levis – and your boots. Have I mentioned that I’m glad you have big feet, sis?
Love you!
She chucked as she read Matthew’s text message and decided to reply to him, ignoring Jason completely.
Just make sure you wash my jeans, okay?
Hey! You’re alive, and what makes you think that I’m the one who actually wore them?
Tramp.
You misspelled ‘Scamp’ – and the ladies love me. How can I let them down?
You’re impossible.
Incorrigible… and are you coming next weekend?
Jason’s been in a real mood, and I’ve got some dirt for you!
Oh?
Toni has a crush.
Dialing Matthew’s phone immediately, he was laughing when he answered on the first ring.
“Well, I now know how to get your attention – don’t I?”
“Toni has a crush? How do you know?”
“Oh man, she’s practically drooling over some pilot at Flyboys in Yonder.”
“No waaaay – our Toni? Bossy-female-version-of Jason—thatToni? The same girl who has no filter on her mouth?”
“Yup. We’ve all got our quirks.”
“Is he cute?”
“You know I’m a guy, right?” her brother retorted in a flat voice, sounding completely perturbed, making her laugh.
“What did Luke say?”
“Luke’s not gay either, Becca. Seriously, what are you thinking moving two hours away… you barely know us anymore.”
“Does that mean you miss me?”
“You know I do, brat.”
