And then there's a knock on the front door.
Oh hell. I button up the cardigan. This will have to do. He’s going to be living with me and will see me like this often anyways. I take a deep breath, smooth down my long brown hair and walk to the door and open it.
A squeak of fear escapes my lips.
“Katie Ross?” a deep voice booms.
I lift my chin. Holy crap, he’s huge. And he’s most certainly not of this planet.
I examine this alien from head to toe. Luckily, I’m not completely unaware of aliens. There are already two other species who have recently set up embassies here on Earth and they trade with us and all is well. I’ve long ago gotten over the freak out over the fact that other species on distant planets really do exist and they want to befriend us here on Earth. But I’ve never meet any of these aliens in real life, only seen them on the news or social media.
And this alien has blue skin. After a moment’s surprise at this unusual pigment, I’m clueing in that he looks sexy and, in fact, deadly.
His black hair is cut very short and he’s got a spectacular black beard. He’s not wearing a shirt and his chest is bare, allowing a terrific visual of flat abs and muscular arms. Black utility-looking pants and heavy black boots complete his outfit. And there is a belt around his waist and across his chest and he carries a backpack.
And there are so many weapons strapped to his body and none of them are recognizable. They all look very alien and high tech.
I meet his dark gaze and see the thick eyelashes and lush, kissable lips.
Oh wow.
I had no idea the alien hunter who was hired to protect me during jury duty was going to turn out to be a sexy beast.
But I’m already shifting on my feet, trying to relieve the heat between my thighs.
Uh oh, this is going to be tricky.
Chapter 2
Vander
Imake my way to the front door of this domicile, immediately irritated at the reminder that this human is not residing in one of the bigger, more secure housing buildings in this Earth city, which makes this assignment more difficult. She instead lives in a neighborhood with many access points to her home.
Spartan Shield sent me here because I was requested by this human’s father who apparently is a fan of my work.
This is always nice to hear. I am from the Best family line, a long line of Hunters. My father, mother and many of my siblings are also Hunters. This type of work is in my blood. And I am proud to represent my species on this planet, which seeks to join the four sectors.
I will keep this male’s daughter safe even if it means the end of my own life blood.
This assignment is going to be more difficult, but it does not mean it’s impossible. I plan on showing how I can be the best.
I've already canvassed the entire perimeter, the roof and the city.
I've mapped out the route to drive the armored vehicle from here to the courthouse.
And I know her schedule.
I've even selected the weapons that I need. But I’ve yet to go inside and decide where to set up, the proximity of where I'm sleeping to where she sleeps, and if any more trip wires need to be placed inside.
Humans on the street stare at me with fear in their eyes and there were a few shrieks of surprise as I walked over. I would say this is the only problem. I’ve worked on many other planets in the four sectors, but only recently transferred to Earth. But I am used to not looking the same as the beings I protect.
As I move with her on the streets of this city, I will be easily identifiable as her guard because of my pigment and become a target myself. But hopefully that would mean I would draw fire from her and this could end up being good.
I knock, and the door opens.
I have to look down, because it turns out, unlike the females on my own planet, this human is much smaller than me. I have met many humans, but apparently the others must have been taller, because she seems fragile.
My new client makes a sound and steps back, a flash of fear in her eyes which I find I do not like. I confirm that she is indeed Katie Ross. My protective hunter instincts are already locking onto this being. I inhale her scent, imprinting upon her.
