He couldn’t be serious?
He crushed me against the wall, his finger still twisted around my underwear as tension smothered us.
“Ahem.”
Nico jerked back, releasing my panties, then straightened his suit jacket as if he didn’t just try to tear them off.
Senator Adams stood at the open elevator doors, his hand resting against it, preventing them from closing.
“Well done,” I whispered.
My nipples pebbled against the thin dress material as Nico gripped my hand.
“Seems you two are getting cozy.”
Nico raised his brows at me with a smirk. “Uh yeah. It’s been a long day. You know how it is?”
Was he... No. Surely, Nico wasn’t blushing?
“Don’t I ever.” Adams laughed as if they shared some secret society joke. “Come on in.”
He waved us out of the elevator, my hand squeezing Nico’s as I crossed the line that divided life and death.
Adams stood half a foot shorter than Nico, wearing a baby blue collared shirt, dark blue vest, and a matching pair of slacks that probably cost more than my entire wardrobe. Which wasn’t exactly saying much since I never bought designer clothes. No sense in wearing Marc Jacobs or Dolce & Gabbana when I’d just get them bloody.
“Pretty nice place you have here,” Nico said as Adams walked us down a hallway. My heart nearly stopped as I caught sight of two armed guards standing beside his door.
He never brought guards here, and if he did, they always waited by the car in the parking garage beneath the building. They never came up.
So what’s different now?
“Thank you. It was one of my first investment properties after I became elected.”
“Bribery pays well, apparently,” I murmured.
“What was that?”
“I, uh, love the wainscotting.”
What the fuck was wainscotting?
Nico gave me a questioning look as I faked a smile and shook my head, gritting my teeth.
“Thank you.” Adams touched a wooden piece that ran horizontal along the center of the wall. “I had the best interior designer and architects work on this project.”
I scanned the walls, the corner of the ceilings, and even the floors on the off chance they were weird about camera placement.
Adams caught me staring at the ceiling. “If you’re looking for cameras, you won’t find any.”
I shook my head. “I wasn’t.”
Nico squeezed my hand and scorned me with his gaze.
How was I supposed to know I wasn’t being subtle?
“Still admiring the architecture.” I cleared my throat. “You know I would think for a man of your position, you’d have a full security system and detail.”
He stopped at the door where Butch and Butcher stood. They had buzzed heads and pressed charcoal black suits and looked the same as they did every day, ready to crush anyone who stepped in their way.
