Without having to wait, my phone dinged back.
Alek: I plead the fifth.
Me: That would be advised.
I smirked but quickly became horrified with myself. How could I be so light-hearted with a man that just stabbed someone? What was wrong with me?
I had told maintenance about the blood everywhere and the offices that needed furniture. The woman was quiet and then asked if I needed police and an ambulance. I told her it wasn’t necessary. It was hard enough having to explain this to staff.
Stretching my neck back and forth, I picked up my laptop, fixed all the abbreviations, and adjusted my notes, before sending the copy via email to Mr. Donovan and Mr. Randall.
I closed the laptop on my desk and glanced at the time; it read five o’clock. Great, I needed to clock out an hour ago. I stood, grabbing my purse, walked to the elevator, and hit “G.” When the doors closed, my phone dinged. As I dug it out of my bag, the elevator stopped on the fifteenth floor.
Lucy: DP for the win. Are they hot?
Oh my God, Lucy, you will be the death of me. I looked up with a smirk on my face, as the one and only Mr. Randall and Mr. Jackson entered the elevator. Fuck, fuckity, fuck.
I belted out a greeting. “Hello again, Mr. Jackson, Mr. Randall.”
“Call me Spence or Randall,” Mr. Randall requested. “I can’t stand the prefix before a name.”
“I’m Alek,” Mr. Jackson added.
“Okay, Randall and Alek, it is,” I confirmed.
I took my place in the back of the elevator as the doors closed. My phone dinged again; this time, it was obnoxious in the quiet elevator.
Lucy: Ask for dick pics
My eyes bulged when Alek chuckled. I refused to look up from my phone when he spoke.
“Next time you text in an elevator, make sure there are no mirrors around.”
I pursed my lips together, closed my eyes, and slowly put my phone into my pocket. I’m going to kill Lucy when I get home.
“My friend lacks a serious filter. I thought it would get better with age, but it only seems to get worse,” I said.
Keeping my eyes to the floor, my phone dinged again.
“You going to get that?” Alek asked.
“Nope,” I answered.
The elevator came to a stop at the garage level, and the doors opened. I shuffled out of the elevator as fast as humanly possible and made it to Lucy’s car. I still didn’t have one of my own, but that was okay. I made it off work before she had to be at work most days. If I was running a little later, she would just get an Uber, and I’d pick her up after. It didn’t happen often.
Throwing my purse into the passenger seat, I started the car, and “Ur so F**king Cool” by Tones and I played loud.
I threw my head back on the headrest and let my heart calm down. I caught Randall and Alek walking to a big black SUV out of the corner of my eyes. I couldn’t peel my gaze away. My phone dinged again, and I felt like breaking my phone. Pulling it from my pocket, I saw two messages waiting for me.
Alek: Drive safe.
I think he needed to pay more attention to his anger issues. I flipped to the message from Lucy.
Lucy: OMW to work.
Me: Sorry, crazy shit happened today.
I put my phone down and reversed out of my spot, and headed home. I needed a shower and a good glass of wine.
