This monstrous creature curled up against him, with her leg on top of his like he belonged to her – she might just be the only godforsaken person capable of figuring out where all his pieces were supposed to go.
Because Mylo had been put togetherwrong.
They’d been so careless, so ignorant.
And she was soverygood at slicing through an angel’s neck. It had been a beautiful, clean line. One slash and the body had taken a full breath to disconnect. That was how fast and precise she’d been.
It might not even hurt when she slid her blade through his body to see where they’d made their senseless mistakes. She’d be fast, merciless. This delicate hand would press against his forehead and offer him the death he so desperately wanted.
She could end him and make him nothing –truenothing. Not even his soul could be stolen then and there’d be nothing left for anyone to take ever again.
Chapter 18
Vix
Vix felt sweaty, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. If anything, she wanted to get closer so she could bask in the heat like a fox taking a nap in a patch of sunlight in the forest. It would warm her fur and make her sleepy as summer sounds buzzed lazily around her.
Stretching her arms, she froze when her knuckles brushed against something that felt a lot like skin. Her eyes popped open and she held her breath when she saw Mylo’s chest in her face. She wanted to bury her nose in it, but she couldn’t get herself to look away from the scar.
It was massive, like he’d had open-heart surgery, or maybe…
An autopsy.
The thought had her heart pounding as she pulled back, pressing her hand to his chest, desperately trying to find his beating heart. It was so slow she couldn’t even feel it, and Vix grabbed his face, terrified he might be dead.
Icy, golden eyes blinked back at her, so sharp and dangerous she should have instantly released him, but she couldn’t, not with the fear still trickling through her veins.
“Are you alive?” she whispered, not quite sure this wasn’t a dream. “They didn’t take your heart?”
Another slow blink that told her nothing.
“Mylo.” She rested her hand on top of his mouth and nose, but didn’t press down. “Please don’t be dead. If you are…I’ll just wake up. It’ll be fine. You won’t be dead.”
There, a soft breath against her fingers and she dropped her head back down to the bed, her inhale shaky as she tried to calm down.
“Why didn’t you answer me?” she whispered, like they were at a sleepover and didn’t want to wake anyone else up. “It’s…difficult…”
Vix blinked, hating the way her eyes stung.
The tears only fell faster thanks to the way she was lying on her side, curled up in Mylo’s arms.
“I don’t always know what’s real,” she confessed, dropping her voice even more so no one else could hear her. “It’s hard to remember sometimes, and…”
A single claw brushed her tears away and she looked up to see his golden eyes glowing in the darkness, but he didn’t look inclined to speak.
“I don’t want you to be dead,” she breathed, burying her face in his neck so she wouldn’t have to see him watch her cry.
Waking up with him in the bed with her had been the last thing she’d anticipated. Mylo had so many sharp edges and he really didn’t like how he couldn’t scent her. Having his warmth when she woke up? It was more than she would have dared to hope for.
She pulled herself closer, breathing in his scent to help calm down her remaining panic.
“You’re here for Rune,” Mylo whispered into her hair. “Not me.”
Vix pulled back, not sure she heard him right. Those pale golden eyes were back, so cold compared to that of his tiger. “You don’t want me?”
Sharp pain in his chest made her gasp at the sudden intensity and she just…didn’t understand.
Mylo stared down at her, his eyes and face giving nothing away, but the new pain he felt…he couldn’t hide that from her even if he could hide his emotions from his scent. She’d almost believed he really didn’t want her, but he hadn’t answered the question, and he was still lying here with her, allowing her to use his arm as a pillow.
