Delaney’s heart warmed. “If you know beauty when you see it, you do know something about art.”

“I certainly do.”

Just like that, they were kissing again. Delaney wasn’t exactly sure where the lemonade went or how it happened, but Logan’s arms were around her and his mouth was on hers. This time, she parted her lips slightly as Logan’s hand skimmed along her spine, making her shiver. The feeling of him, so masculine and sexy, made her knees feel weak again.

“I can go home,” Logan whispered against her lips.

“Don’t.” Then she was on his lap, her hands in his hair as they kissed again. Logan pressed searing kisses to her cheek and her neck until Delaney forgot about everything but his touch. They were the only two people in the world.

“You’re beautiful,” Logan said. He pulled back and ran a hand along the curve of her waist in wonder. “So beautiful.”

“Would you like to go to bed?” Delaney asked. Her voice caught slightly. Unlike some of her friends, who spent their weekends at clubs and in bed with new guys, Delaney never did anything like this. Something was special about Logan, though. Special enough to make her forget her usual sensibilities and focus only on this moment, on how good it felt to be in his arms, and on how her heart raced when he said how beautiful she was.

Again, Logan didn’t hesitate. He didn’t reply either. He just stood up, Delaney in his arms. She wrapped her legs around hiswaist, and he carried her across her studio to the bed, where he gently laid her down. Delaney looked up at him and he looked down at her, his eyes intense. For a long moment, they both took each other in. Then Logan bent his head and kissed her again. His hand slid under the hem of her dress, skimming along her calf, past her knee, up her thigh… higher.

For a long time after that, they were in perfect harmony.

CHAPTER 4

DELANEY

Delaney woke slowly, luxuriously. Early fall sunlight streamed through her window, warming her bed, and she felt wonderfully relaxed. As she woke, memories from the night before returned to her. She and Logan had slept together. It had been wonderful — more than wonderful. Maybe, despite their differences, there was a chance of something between them. Perhaps not a serious relationship, but at least something casual. Delaney felt her lips tug into a smile.

With a yawn, she opened her eyes fully and sat up. She was alone in bed. She felt a moment of worry. Logan wouldn’t have left without saying goodbye, would he? But then she saw him emerging from the bathroom, dressed again in his slacks and button-down. His hair had been neatly combed and he looked refreshed. Once again, he could have stepped off a poster or out of a fashion magazine.

“Good morning.” Delaney rolled out of bed and pulled on her robe. Logan had seen her completely bare last night, but in the bright light of the sun, she wanted to have something on. “How did you sleep?”

“Well.” Logan reached for his belt, which was on the floor, and threaded it through the loops on his slacks.

“I can make breakfast. I’m not sure what I have, but there’s definitely coffee.”

“Thanks, but I have to run. I’m already going to be late for a meeting.”

“On Saturday?” Delaney wrinkled her nose.

“Unfortunately so. Ordinal requires a lot of work.” Logan seemed strangely distant this morning. Delaney crossed her arms protectively over her stomach.

“I get that. How about some coffee for the road?”

“No, thanks.” Logan was already by the door. He slid his feet into his shoes. Delaney felt a rush of worry — was he really just going to leave? With barely more than a word to her?

“Well, will I see you later?” she blurted. Logan turned slowly, one shoe still in his hand.

“Delaney.” He smiled, but it wasn’t the playful grin of the night before. “We spent an enjoyable night together, but I don’t see this turning into anything. A one-night stand is all I imagined we’d have — I’m just too busy for anything else. I think you are, too. There’s just no future here.”

“Oh.” Delaney felt like the air had been knocked out of her. She hadn’t expected that they were going to become a couple, but she’d at least hoped that they’d make plans to see each other again. After all, they’d just spent an amazing evening and night together — or at least she thought they had.

“I really do need to go.” Logan bent down and slid his other shoe on. “Have a nice day.”

And with that, he was gone. Delaney stood in the middle of her studio, reeling. Had he really just wished her a nice day, like they’d just had a business meeting instead of spent a passionate night together? For a few minutes, she didn’t move. Part of her expected that Logan would come back through the door with his grin and an offer to grab lunch later.

But when there was no knock at the door, Delaney knew it was time to face facts. Logan was just like all the other rich jerks she knew, who felt like they could take anything they wanted with no regard for the consequences. Everything Logan had said the night before had probably been a lie. At the very least, he was done telling her how beautiful she was.

Delaney’s hands balled into fists. It wasn’t right for him to walk out on her like that, before they’d even had a chance to talk.

There was nothing she could do about it, though. She’d made a mistake by throwing caution to the wind the night before. She should have just sent Logan home outside her building.

Although the night they’d spent together… well, it was hard to regret that. It really had been amazing, which was part of why it hurt so much that Logan had walked away like he had.
