Thank you for giving me a chance as a ranch hand. Not a lot of people would have.
I can’t stay, with things being the way they are between us. It’s time for me to move on.
Please make arrangements to have Diablo delivered to the ranch as soon as possible. I will, of course, pay for transporting him. Please send me a text to let me know when he will be moved.
I wish you all the love and happiness in the world.
Taylor
She dropped the note on the table and loaded her bag into the truck. Taylor stopped by the bunkhouse on her way out to talk to Robert and Sam.
“Things have just got to be too much for me here. You guys have been great, but I need to go,” Taylor said.
“You’re one of us,” Robert said. “You can’t leave.”
“I don’t want to, but between the gossip going around and… and well some other things going on, I can’t stay. I hope you guys will visit when I get my ranch up and running, and we’ll have drinks before then. You have my number.”
“I’ll miss you,” Sam said.
“I’ll miss you too. Will you take care of my horse for me until we can get him to my ranch?”
“You know we will,” Sam said. “He’ll be so spoiled that he won’t want to leave.”
“Thank you,” Taylor said and quickly left before they could see the tears in her eyes.
She stopped by Diablo’s stall and wrapped her arms around the horse. “I have to go for a few days, but we’ll be back together again soon. I love you, so much.”
Taylor hugged her horse for a while, crying against his neck. Then, with a kiss on his nose, she left.
Chapter 19: Lane
“What are you doing here?” Lane demanded.
“I came to see you. Everyone knows that your engagement was fake. You did that just so that you could make me jealous. We were meant to be together,” Rachel said.
She wrapped her arms around Lane and kissed him, trying to press her tongue into his mouth. He put his hands on her shoulders and pushed her away.
“Girl, you are out of your cotton-pickin’ mind. I wouldn’t marry you if you were the last female of breeding age left in the world. You are mean, superficial, and have no concept of what it means to be a real human being,” Lane said. “You need to go home.”
“What do you mean?” Rachel asked. “I love you. I’ve always loved you.”
Lane could tell that she was trying to muster up a tear, but he wasn’t sure if it was because she wasn’t getting her way or if he had hurt her feelings. Either way, he didn’t care. He had enough of her.
Colton had walked in right before the kiss and simply shook his head when Lane looked over at him for help.
“You don’t know the meaning of love,” Lane said. “The only person you care about is you. If my bank account didn’t look like it does, you wouldn’t look at me twice. Go home.”
“I don’t have a return ticket and no way to get to the airport,” she pouted.
“How did you get out here?” Colton asked.
“Uber.”
“Well, you can just Uber back,” Lane said.
Unfortunately, there was no one available to pick her up, even for the large sum of money that Rachel was offering.
“Fine. Colton and I will take you back,” Lane growled.
