“Audrey, there’s something I don’t understand. You kept calling out to me. How did you know my name? Did we met somewhere before the accident?”

I stared at him in astonishment. “Is your name Marcel?” I asked him.

He nodded, and I began to giggle, which made my neck hurt. I belatedly realized my neck was in traction.

“Wow!” I said. “You were in my dream! You were a merman who shifted into a dolphin, and we had the most amazing...”

He looked puzzled, but also interested. “Amazing what?”

“Sex.”

“We had... sex? When I was a... dolphin?”

“And a Merman.”

The doctor’s face was quite red, but he didn’t let go of my hand. In fact, he began to stroke it gently. “I hope it was a... good dream, Audrey.”

“It was heavenly, Marcel. I didn’t want it to end.”

“I hope I get a chance to hear all about it when you’re stronger. Now, you must rest.”

“Marcel... um, doctor? I’ve been resting for weeks. Please don’t leave me?”

“I have to finish my rounds, but I’ll be back, and you can tell me the whole story.” And he gently kissed my fingers and tucked my hand under the thin sheet that covered me.

I recovered fast after that, and when I got to go home, I saw Dr. Marcel Laurent almost every day. He was so enchanted with the story of my ‘afterlife,’ he asked me tell it to him all the time.

After a brief courtship, we married and went to the Maldives for our honeymoon.

And we lived happily ever after.
