Ihatedthisfuckingcity.
I haven’t been back in four years and even though I knew we were coming back to this city, I really wished it wasn’t true. I left America thinking I’d never come back. I mean, Dimitri found me when I was eighteen, after I had killed three men. I thought Dimitri was going to make number four. Instead, he made me an offer to be his enforcer. I didn’t think too much about it, just said, “Sure.”
Then I was off, traveling back to Russia with him. The rest was history. I mean, a year later Killian came along. Therefore, I never thought we’d come back here as much as we have.
And I hated this city.
This city made my skin itch.
Four years ago, Dimitri asked me to do a stupid task. A stupid task that ended with me knocked out in an alleyway with a broken nose and my kneecaps bruised. My ego was shot, and I refused to tell anyone who I ended up with said injuries.
I mean it was a female, I knew that. But she caught me off guard.
“Where’s Luca?” Dimitri inquired. Locking eyes on Giulio and Leonzo they both showed disrespect. It made my murderly ways crawl up, making me want to drill my fist into their faces.
We arrived in Boston two days ago, trying to adjust to the time change. Luca set up a meeting for tonight only for us to show up and with no Luca. Instead two underbosses that were in charge of Luca’s clubs. Which didn’t make any sense because the whole point of this meeting was Luca announcing he was done being a little bitch. When he went underground years ago no one knew where he went. Suddenly he’s back, so you would think he would shop up and show up with his security men.
Not the club bosses.
“He couldn’t make it.” Giulio shrugged like it was no big deal. But it was, it meant Luca didn’t respect Dimitri.
“Hmm.”
“Luca just wanted us to meet you here to welcome you. He sent his apologies for not being able to make it.” Leonzo followed suit and shrugged, laughing it off as no big deal.
None of us followed suit. None of us wanted to be here. Killian most likely wanted to shove his face into his computer. I wanted to just lie in my bed and Dimitri wanted to be with his family.
“Well, welcome is appreciated.” Dimitri kept his expression cold. He was not happy; it was a thing I could pick up on. Just like Killian was thinking about anything but this meeting. He hated doing any of this, only doing it if he absolutely needed to. “I think we’re just going to finish this drink and head out.”
“How's the wife and that child you have?” Giulio asked.
Dimitri barely let on that they made a mistake of mentioning his family. They both laughed, which only caused Dimitri to tense up even more. Killian glanced at me, making it look more like he was just blinking. No one would’ve put together that he was warning me to be prepared.
“I didn’t come here to discuss my family.” Dimitri smiled. The smile was all for play. I don’t know why either of them thought it would be a good idea to bring up a man's family.
“All is well.” Giulio stood up buttoning his suit jacket up. “It was nice to see you again,Dimitri.”
We watched as both men walked away, leaving out the door to my left. No one spoke for a few minutes, but I could tell Dimitri was close to losing his patience.
“I have eyes on them, D.” Killian nudged his shoulder trying to show him his phone. I’m sure Mila had no idea that Dimitri had the house bugged, cameras in every room, microphone everywhere. He was surely paranoid. But that would happen when your wife was kidnapped by sex traffickers, and then sold, just to be kidnapped again, and then taken from the person who bought her.
Mila literally had the worst luck of anyone I ever knew.
“Killian, keep eyes on them until I get there. Zane, I'm assuming you let them know.”
I nodded my head. I had six men posted around the house, and another three inside. It wasn’t a lot, but Dimitri preferred not to have too many guards. Less men around Mila, who made her highly uncomfortable. She only trusted the three of us.
“I’m going to head there now. I don’t care what you guys do. Tomorrow, I’ll need you both at seven.”
Leaving without another word, Dimitri headed downstairs. Our three men who were hiding followed behind him.
“I’m getting food, you game?” Killian asked, pocketing his phone, standing from the couch.
“Sure, I’ll head out in a few.”
Killian nodded his head, leaving the same way Dimitri had. I don’t know why I wanted to stay for a little bit, but for some reason I was not ready to leave. Even though I hated this type of scene; I hated being social. I almost didn’t feel human.
Walking over to the railing I looked down at the crowd of adults dancing against each other. I never found the appeal of wanting to be that close to another person. It was disgusting. I sometimes wondered what it was like to have someone you wanted to touch, wanted to spend time with. I wondered if Dimitri ever had those thoughts about Mila, or if he truly just looked at her and wanted her.
