Or so I thought.

IexpectedSalemtobe doing a few things, showering, maybe eating, watching TV, hell even sleeping. It was four in the morning. On the way over here I drove slower than normal just because I was fighting with myself about coming to her house. I had no good reason to. I was not a good guy, never claimed I was. But she crawled into my heart and kept knocking on it. When I didn’t want to think about her, I did. She had a hold of me.
I slept with plenty of women, but something was different with Salem. Something about her called to me, like my demons were controlled around her. She kept me sane.
When I parked my truck down the street, everything felt off. Something was off with this place. Then I noticed the two black SUVs, completely blacked out. The number of times I’d been here, I had never seen them.
Running down the sidewalk to her house, the lights were off except one. Standing in front of the door, I raised my hand ready to knock when I heard a loud grunt. I had no idea what I expected when I kicked the door in. But it definitely was not two men holding Salem by her arms, while two others took turns punching and kicking her body.
Her lifeless body from the looks of it.
The other person I didn’t expect to see was Remo standing against the wall watching it all unfold.
I barely knew Remo, but I knew he was just soulless. He never cared about anything.
“Well hello there, Zane.” Remo smiled.
It was a smile I didn’t like, something behind it. He wasn’t being nice, even if he wanted to. He was hiding something.
“Remo,” I growled. I couldn’t help the protectiveness I was gaining from looking over at Salem moaning in pain. She looked terrible. Her nose was broken, her lip was split open, both eyes looked pretty swollen, and her side was bleeding, but I couldn’t tell from what. Her body looked weak and broken down. She looked so different from the girl I saw an hour ago.
“What are you doing here?” he asked, stepping away from the wall. Remo squared his shoulders, trying to appear taller than he was. He was still shorter than me, and I almost chuckled with him trying to hide the fact that he was intimidated by me.
“I could ask you the same thing, Remo.”
“Does your boss know you’re here?” Remo deflected.
“Does yours?”
He tightened his jaw, and from the looks of it, Luca had no idea what Remo was doing. Dimitri never gave a shit about what Killian or I did on the side, as long as we didn’t bring trouble back to him. He knew we were loyal, we were best friends, and all of that pussy bullshit.
“What’d she do?” I motioned towards Salem.
“You think just because Luca asked Dimitri for help, I’m going to spill all my secrets to you?” Remo cocked his head to the side, staring at me like I kicked his puppy. God, he was annoying the shit out of me. “She killed the men. I saw her kill Orlando…” he trailed off. Then it clicked, if he saw her killing him, that would mean he saw me, saw me letting her. Then he must have seen us, together.Fuck.
In a split second the two who were beating Salem rushed towards me. Yanking my knife out I sliced the throat of the first and punched the second one in the throat. He began gagging. Bringing the knife up, I stabbed his chest aiming directly for his heart. He’d die slowly.
The other two dropped Salem like a sack of potatoes. She groaned in pain, which only fired my anger even more. I didn’t like that they hurt her. I didn’t like that she was bleeding out and was in pain.
With a roar I grabbed hold of the blond around the throat, slamming him into the second one. Throwing the knife into the blond’s neck, the second fell below the blond.
“ENOUGH!” Remo barked, causing me to look up as he held Salem. Her back was pressed against his chest, arms wrapped around her throat. Her eyes landed on mine. She looked so sad, so broken, but I had no idea why. “You need to leave, and we will never speak of this again.”
“You think they won’t find out about this blood bath?” I laughed. He was going to die painfully.
“If you can keep your fucking mouth shut, yes. If not, I’ll just end you both right here right now. Come on, I saw her run out after you fucked her. You don’t give a fuck about this whore.”
I saw red.
My anger fueled me, and I charged at him. He threw Salem down as I tackled him and threw our bodies on the ground. We threw punches at each other, but I was fighting for an actual reason. I don’t even remember the last time I got so angry that I threw punches, not seeing where I was even punching. I didn’t care about anything. He hurt Salem.
Salem.
Bashing his head into the ground his arms went back to the side, his eyes barely open. I looked over at her. She was weakly walking back over holding a fucking cleaver. She looked amazing. Beautiful. Hot. She looked like mine. She limped over to me, standing above us.
