Someone must have told the wolverine about this deal. Did they have a traitor in the tribe? He shook his head. That was impossible. None of his battle brothers or sisters would betrayanother warrior. Their berserkers would alert them if one of them had lost their honor.

He scanned the airport area again. If there were more wolverines, he’d best protect the mortals by getting on the road back to Washington State and lead the wolverines away from White Spruce. Away from Cassie.

Cassie.

He stilled, thinking about how she’d dropped his phone in the diner. And she’d potentially been alone with it while he’d been in the bathroom after their love-making…after they’d fucked. Even if she didn’t have reception at her house, she could have read the messages he’d already received.

The berserker scoffed his disagreement. Not själsfrände,it said.

Sten ignored the beast and slid into the SUV. He reached for his phone to report this fresh development to his king. But then he put it away again.

First, he’d deal with Cassie on his own.

She owed him some answers.

CHAPTER 6

Sten whipped into Cassie’s driveway, slammed the Escalade into the park, and got out. She opened the door of the cottage as he stomped up the steps to her front porch.

“Are you okay?” she asked, tilting her head to peer behind him. “Is someone chasing you?”

He glared at her. “Why do you ask? Did you think the wolverine would come to visit after it had killed me? Maybe pay you a bounty?”

She startled and took a step back. “What are you talking about? Someone tried to kill you?”

He took advantage of her retreat and pushed her further into the cottage. He closed the door behind him and locked the door. “Is anyone else in the house?”

She licked her lips and stepped back again. “You’re scaring me. What’s going on?”

He felt bad for frightening her, but still stalked after her. “Why did you do it? Why did you pretend to like me and then betray me?” Fuck. He sounded like a whiny little kid, but this rage over her betrayal had taken control over his body and his mind.

Cassie stopped retreating and planted her feet on the ground. “What the fuck are you talking about? I didn’t betray you. Have you gone mad?” Anger glittered in her honey-colored eyes. The berserker growled its disapproval in his chest.

“Are you fucking growling at me?” Cassie yelled. “You come here with bonkers accusations, and when I defend myself, you growl. What is wrong with you?”

She sounded so sincere. Could he be wrong? But nobody else had access to his phone.

He threw up his hands. “I don’t know what the fuck is happening right now. You’re the only one who had access to my phone?” He couldn’t go back to the King and Queen, telling them he’d almost fucked the entire mission and endangered regular mortals’ lives.

“Someone hacked your phone?” she asked. “You thought I hacked your phone?” She took a step closer, biting her lips. “Look, I don’t even have a computer around here. Do you really think I’m savvy enough to break into a phone?” She put her hand on his chest. “Why don’t you take a seat and calm down a little? We’ll figure out who might have gotten whatever information they shouldn’t have and messed things up for you.” Her tone sounded calm, but anger still glittered in her eyes.

The heat from her hand burned through his clothes until his skin felt as if it were on fire. His berserker growled deep in Sten’s chest, and with no conscious thought, he grabbed her and forced his lips against hers.

She froze for a beat, but then their tongues tangled, and he was instantly hard. She moaned into his mouth and pressed more firmly against him, igniting every single one of his nerve endings. How could she have sold him out when this felt so right?

“Tell me you’re not working for Loki or any of his minions,” Sten demanded.

Cassie grabbed the hair on the back of his head and angled his face so she could deepen the kiss. “I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about,” she growled. “And why is it that every time you’re near, I want to jump you?” She opened her legs and pushed her center against his thigh. “I can’t think straight around you. All I want is to feel you inside me.”

His cock pressed so hard against his zipper that it might bust. “I need to know that you didn’t sell me out,” he panted.

“Don’t start with that again,” she moaned against his throat, changing position so her heat pressed against his hardness. “I don’t even know you. How would I know to sell you out?”

He backed her up toward the bedroom where they’d spent the night. She twisted them around before they reached the bed and pushed him down on his back. She leaned over him and pulled off his T-shirt.

His berserker howled its approval of her being the aggressor.

Cassie answered with a growl of her own. He wondered briefly how she could hear his inner warrior, but then his mind blanked when she licked his sternum.
