Because I knew my princess, I knew she was stubborn, headstrong, and often wore her heart on her sleeve. I knew that because when I made her feel terrible, I was the one who forced her to let me hold her, to let me wipe away her tears as I whispered how sorry I was.

I nodded silently in response as she pushed a strand of hair behind her ear.

“So, you just came from practice?” she asked, effectively changing the subject, and I almost let out a smile. Guess talking to Sterling wasn’t a complete waste of time.

“Unfortunately,” I muttered, and she simply rolled her eyes, knowing already how I felt about these kinds of activities the students were forced to take part in.

I wanted to say something more as we stared at one another for another moment or so, but I couldn’t form any more words the longer my eyes lingered on her.

A small blush rose to her cheeks, and I decided to take my leave before I did anything too impulsive.

“Y-you’re leaving?” she asked as I began walking away.

I paused momentarily. “I need to get back to the office… I have a few things to run through with my assistants.”

She said nothing as her eyes looked down, and my jaw clenched slightly. Turning back, I placed a finger under her chin so she would look up at me. Because I was so perceptive of her, I noticed the moment she let out a soft gasp as her face grew even more red.

Why can’t you ever leave me alone?

“I’m staying away… just like you asked me to, Princess.”

She gulped softly, and I walked away, leaving her in the middle of the hall as I chuckled on the inside. This is going to be fun.

Chapter eighteen

Omniscient

Calvin walked into his office.

Andrew followed him. “Russel is looking for ways to find loopholes in the contract his real estate department has with my company... Should we plan to do something about it?”

“Killian won’t be able to find anything, because no matter the way he backs out, it will result in a loss for him. Knowing Killian, he’s too selfish to give me the satisfaction of taking seventy-five million dollars from him for a simple contract.”

“But to him, it’s more than a contract. In his mind, it binds his company to yours. Even if it’s through a business partner of mine, seventy-five percent of the money that was given to him was yours.”

“Exactly why he will continuously be a step or two behind. This small transaction was the beginning part of the plan. This doesn’t bind me to Killian’s company. No, this is far too small. If we decide to back out of the contract, then neither one of us suffers... but that would be too easy… for my surrender comes with a price,” Calvin finished, and Andrew nodded, but his eyes landed on an envelope on Calvin’s empty desk.

“That wasn’t there when we left, was it?”

Calvin shook his head, walking over to the desk. “It sure as hell wasn’t.” He opened it and pulled out the letter that was inside.

Hello, Calvin.

It’s been fifteen years. Believe it or not, I’ve grown from my mistakes and took this time to figure myself out. My parents are doing as well as they can, being paralyzed from the waist down.

No thanks to you, or specifically my brother, who caused this. This was a small note to let you know that I’ve been doing well. Though it’s been fifteen years, I’m now ready to move on through the betrayal you’ve put me through.

But I do believe I know someone who isn’t quite so ready to move on, and he knows he has adaughter.

Calvin tossed the paper on the desk as his anger started to rise.

“Marissa is alive,” he said, and Andrew paused completely.

“You can’t be fucking serious.”

Calvin walked over to his desk and placed his finger on the scanner to open the last drawer.

“She was supposed to be dead!” Andrew whisper-yelled, and Calvin glared at him for a moment before going back to rummaging through his drawer.
