“Calvin Lockwood. You are under arrest as the accomplice and accessory to the first-degree murders of Marissa Newman, Gregory Newman, Cheryl Newman, and Michael Donovan. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to represent you. Do you understand the rights I have just read to you?”
“If I must answer… then sure I do,” my father replied, unamused.
The officer listened in to his radio and nodded to his partners. “Let’s take them into custody.”
They began walking but stopped as Brielle stood in the entryway and looked directly at Eugene. Eugene cowered away from her slightly, and Killian was unsure if he should interfere and pull her away.
“Eugene,” she whispered, and he let out a tear.
“Brielle, please. I’m so sorry. I-I didn’t want you to find out this way.”
She approached him slowly, and the officers went to speak, but went silent as Killian gave them a look.
“What have you done, Eugene?” she asked softly.
More tears ran down his eyes as he grew angrier, and a somewhat sinister look passed in his eyes.
“I’m keeping you safe! That’s all I’ve wanted to do my entire life... I will do anything for my family… anything for you. If that means killing the fuckers that tortured us, then so be it.”
Brielle gently placed a hand on Eugene’s face, and he leaned into it as she wiped his tears. “Eugene, honey.”
“Brielle... I just wanted to keep you safe. I love you with everything in me,” he rushed, and she nodded.
“I know. I love you, too. Okay, breathe for me,” she requested, placing a hand on his racing heart.
He leaned closer as he put his head on her shoulder. She pulled him in closer for a hug, and a sob racked his chest.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen,” he muttered.
Brielle nodded as she rubbed her hand on his back and through his hair, shushing his cries. “I know. It’ll be over soon. We’re going to fix this, and then we’re going to get some help… for the both of us. But I have to let you go now. I will see you soon, okay?” she whispered, and he nodded as she pulled away.
Wordlessly, the cops guided Eugene out of the home, as well as my father, who wasn’t exactly as compliant. He scoffed as the police officers dragged him out of the room. “So what? I don’t get a parting hug or final goodbye speech as well? Outrageous, I say!” he yelled, and I held my head in my hands at the disaster that tonight had become.
Vivienne came alive from her frozen state and looked around the room.
“It’s… getting pretty late. You all are welcome to the guest rooms if you choose to stay the night. Pierce can… take you to them. Now, if you’ll excuse me,” she muttered absentmindedly, bidding us goodbye.
The room went silent.
My heart pounded in my chest at the thought of Delilah staying, as I probably wouldn’t be able to keep my hands off of her.
Brielle was silent as Killian rubbed her back soothingly.
Blaine still looked extremely excited, while Maia seemed a bit worried. Nonetheless, the families agreed to stay the night, andPierce guided them to their rooms as they made arrangements and called their children at home. Luca also stayed, and Sterling trailed behind Kimiko, much to her father’s dismay.
Making my way to my corridor of our home, I entered my room, took a long shower, and left the bathroom with soaking wet hair. Slipping on some bottoms, I exited my room and made my way to my parents’ room to check on Vivienne.
I knocked softly, and she allowed me in.
I leaned against the frame as she sat at the edge of the bed. “Going to bed soon?” I asked.
She nodded. A small tear escaped her eye, and she wiped it away quickly as she kept her head down.
There was nothing I could say that would make things better for her at this moment, and I decided not to attempt to.
“Get some rest. We have a long few days ahead of us.”
She nodded, and I bid her goodnight as I closed the door.
