“We should make it a memorable one, then.”

The day went by quickly, and as Sawyer had predicted, they were completely packed and loaded by three o’clock. The only thing still in the apartment was the furniture and what personal items they needed to spend one more night.

After locking the trailer, they went into the apartment lobby and Sawyer stopped at the bottom of the stairs.

“Do you want to race up the stairs?”

“No.”

“Come on. You’ve been a bit of a Debbie Downer today.”

“I have not.”

He cocked his head. “Yeah, you have. I let it go, figuring you were still processing our…ah, interesting night. But now, the packing is done. We have one last night in the city. Such as it is. So, turn that frown upside down, Skittles.”

She punched him in the shoulder. “Why are you so happy?”

“I’m always happy.”

“I don’t want to race up the stairs. I’ll probably trip and fall and break my neck.”

“You might trip. But I’d never let you fall.” She sat down on the bottom step and he sat next to her. “What’s going on? Is this about last night?”

“Sort of. Partly. I don’t know. I guess I’m feeling a little bit cheated.”

“Cheated how?”

She glanced at him. “I would like to have some memory of crossing the line in such a spectacular fashion.”

Sawyer started to laugh. “Wow. I thought you were upset it happened. You’re upset because you can’t remember it.”

She laid her head on his shoulder. “I know it’s dumb.”

“It’s not dumb. I wish I could remember it too. I did get one flash when I was in the shower.”

Jade covered her face. “Oh gosh.”

“You know. If it’d make you feel better, we could revisit the moment without the alcohol.”

She got to her feet. “Sawyer. No. We’re forgetting it happened, remember?”

“Right. Because that’s working out so well for us.”

She took his arm and pulled him to his feet. “Run up the stairs. I think you have some excess energy to get rid of. Even though you’ve been up and down the stairs a million times today.”

He grinned at her. “Okay. I’ll see you up there.”

He ran up the stairs, turned around at the top and ran back down, passing her at the halfway point. He went to the bottom, then got to the second floor the same time she did.

She scowled at him. “You’re a show off.”

“And you’re a grump.”

They went into the apartment, and Jade slumped down on the couch. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”

He stood in front of her and folded his arms across his chest. “You need sex.”

“Stop. Forget it.”
