“Hey, son. You have a baby sister.”
“Damn, Dad. That’s great news.” He sat on the edge of the bed. “How’d it go? Is Ember okay?”
“She’s fine. She’s amazing. And so is little Esty.”
“I love that. Great-grandma would be proud.”
“I assume you two got home okay, then.”
Sawyer hesitated for a moment. “Um…yeah.”
“Sawyer?”
He should’ve just said yes. “We had a slight problem. I’ll tell you about it later.”
“You’re both okay, right?”
“Yes. We’re both fine.”
“And…the truck?”
Sawyer sighed. “The truck is not so fine. But it will be.” He cleared his throat. “When can we meet Esty?”
“We’ll be coming home in a few hours. Ember is resting, and the doc wants to check her and the baby one more time before he sends us home.”
“Do you want me to call everyone, or are you doing that?”
“I’ll call Dad and Genny. Will you tell Sage and J.T.?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, I’m going to go catch a little sleep. We’ll see you soon.”
Sawyer ended the call. Another little sister. “Esty O’Connell, you’re going to grow up with a lot of people loving you.”
He went back to the fireplace and put some wood on it, then laid back down. Jade stirred. “Was that your dad?”
“Yeah. Ember had a girl.”
Jade sat up. “Oh my gosh. That’s so cool. When do we get to see her?”
“They’ll be home in a few hours.” He sat, too. “I need to call J.T.”
He dialed J.T.’s number. It was almost eight, and they’d be up.
J.T. answered with, “Why are you calling me so early in the morning?”
“Ember had the baby last night.”
“Shit. That’s great news. Are they okay?”
“Yeah. Dad said it went great.”
“So, what time did they leave last night?”
“Sometime after midnight. It’s kind of all a blur. What are you doing this morning?”
“Not much.”
