“I would hope you knew what to do, as you are The Key to all of this, Miss Snow.” My sword deadpanned.
Okay, yes. Charge in, slay the Demons, save the humans. I got that part. But is this the right spot? Are the humans here? And why the hell does everyone keep referring to me by ‘Miss Snow’? Can that stop, please for the love of all things holy?
“Fine. Focus, Erin. Sense for yourself.”
How?
“Focus.”
Aren’t you helpful?
I huffed, shutting my eyes. I dove deep within myself, beyond the flame, lightning, and the blob. My skin tingled and I found myself within the center of the summit. Surrounded by Demons of all shapes and sizes with humans, men and women, in their grasp. Thirteen. All thirteen were there. My chest welled with relief. I counted the Demons, and my hope deflated. We were vastly outnumbered.
I came back to myself, blinking my eyes open. “They’re here,” Derik moved to rush in, I clamped my hand down on his shoulder, keeping him in place. “They’re here. But we’re outnumbered. There’s over twenty Demons out there Derik. We’re royally fucked.”
He swore under his breath. My ears pricked at the sound of Libby tapping on her phone.
“Libby what the hell are you doing?” I hissed.
“I’m calling for backup. We have a few guys that stay on the outskirts, you met them when we originally went to Riverside.” I racked my brain trying to remember. I came up with jack squat.
“Fine,” there was no point in arguing. “How long until they get here?”
“Within an hour or two.”
Leaves crunched behind us. My body stiffened, alarms going off in my head.
A man’s voice scratched behind us, “Well, well, well. Would you look at who we have here? It seems, our Key has come out to play.”
Chapter forty-five
Erin
The Demon, an oversized blue-hued nightmare with spikes scaling its shoulders, muscles bulging from under its skin, veins pulsing, looked down at the three of us still crouched on the ground. I went to draw my dagger but Derik beat me to it, pulling out his and sprang into action.
I silently thanked him and pulled Libby with me as we ran for the clearing. “Erin, we can’t leave him!”
I shouted over my shoulder, “You know as well as I do that Derik will be fine. Especially against the one. If we don’t move now and get what surprise we can on them, we’re fucked. Once Derik slays it, the others will smell its blood, alerting them all that we’re here. You know how that works far better than I do, Lib.”
“But, Erin, I can't…”
I whirled, stopping us in our tracks and braced my hands on Libby’s arms. “Where did that strong, fierce Nephilim in the forest go, Lib? He’ll be okay. You know that.”
“But, what if he’s not, Erin? I cheated on him, and I didn’t even know it. And I haven’t apologized. We haven’t talked since you left and ran off to Josh. None of us are talking besides Seth and Josh.” A tear ran down her cheek.
How did younotknow you cheated? And since when were the two of you dating?
I shook my head, filing it away.
It didn’t matter.
“Libby, listen to me,” I held her eyes. “We’re going to make it out of this. All of us. Derik, you, the humans, me,” I bit back the wince at the small lie. “The only ones not making it out of here alive are those damn creepy assholes, do you hear me?”
Libby nodded. “I hear you.”
I smiled as wide as I could. “Ready to kill some assholes?”
“Hell yeah.”
