“Fine,” she spoke, her eyes burning through me. “I’ll come back tomorrow. I just can’t right now.”
All I could do was nod, and as she walked out, guilt settled in my chest. I hated hurting her, but I was beginning to hate the thought of not being with her even more.
I sank to the floor on my knees, wanting to reach out to her. I wanted to tell her to come back, but I knelt silently with my dark thoughts as my shadows started to surround me like the prison I’d put myself in.
Chapter 3
Lillian
Storming out of the gym had been hard. I wanted to turn back around and take what he would give me, even if that meant his touch was for training purposes only, but I was too fed up with his behavior to stand down. I’d gotten excited when his thoughts of taking me against the wall broke through, but then he’d reined them back in and pushed me away like he always did.
When his arms wrapped around me, I’d nearly melted into a puddle on the floor like a pathetic mess.
I knew I was probably being childish. My life was at stake, and here I was, throwing a fit because the man I desperately desired, despite trying to convince myself not to, didn’t want to act on his feelings. I knew he wanted me. Ifeltit, and that made it all the worse.
I just wanted Keir to admit how he felt. Yes, I wanted his body pressed against mine, making me his, but it was more than that. The connection I had with Keir was more than just the telepathy shit. It was different, stronger than the pull I had with the twins, even though I had their essences flowing through me. My heart felt full when I was near him, and my mind was quiet and peaceful.
I just wish yo—
“That was fast,” Nicholas interrupted the thought I’d begun projecting. His eyes scoured my face. “What’s wrong?”
I tried to relax and smile but could only manage a grimace. “The usual,” I laughed awkwardly. “I don’t know when I’ll learn. It’s clear he’s never going to come around, but I just thought… Your mom said to wait, and I—”
“Our mother said to wait?”
I shrugged. “Yeah. It was a whole thing. She’d asked me who I was in love with…” I felt myself blush from my cheeks to my neck. “I couldn’t give her just one name…”
He chuckled, the sound melting some of my tension. “I get it. Don’t worry. We are all so irresistible.” He winked, making me giggle. “Baby, if she said to wait, then wait. She knows Keir better than anyone. He will come around; give him time.”
I started to open my mouth, but Nicholas raised his eyebrows, and I immediately closed it.
“I know I’ve said that before, but it’s true. Keir has to sort out his shit and decide what he wants.”
“Well, he doesn’t want me…” I said under my breath as I looked down at the floor. I sounded like a preteen girl whose crush didn’t like her back. Iwaspathetic.
Nicholas tucked a finger under my chin and lifted, forcing me to look at him. “Hedoeswant you, Lilly. I see it. Aiden sees it. Even you’ve seen it. He just doesn’t want to hurt you.”
“Hurt me?” I scoffed. “He’s not going to hurt me.”
“We know that.Heis still figuring that out.” He leaned forward and planted a soft kiss on my lips. “Now, stop chasing him like a lost stray and be the extraordinary woman who’s going to kick these trials in the ass and make a name for herself.”
I loved how he saw me: a powerful force to be reckoned with.
I bit down on my lip to hold back my grin, but he used his thumb to pull it from between my teeth, my smile spreading the moment it was free.
“There she is,” he spoke sweetly, looking at me with love-drunk eyes.
Aiden came out of our room and smiled mischievously. “Back so soon, little one? Did you miss us?” His tongue darted out, sweeping across his lips as his eyes roamed my body. “You didn’t even break a sweat.” He held his hand out to me. “We need to change that.”
Aiden dragged me into the room and pushed me onto the bed.
“What do you say, Nicholas?” The corner of Aiden’s mouth hooked up, his eyes never leaving mine. “Ready to play?”
His twin stood beside him, staring at me splayed out on the bed. The way he drank me in made my breathing pick up and my heart race, my skin tingling with anticipation. His sweet smile turned into a devilish grin, and my stomach knotted up.
“Oh, I’m ready to play.” His voice was provocative, eyes playful.
“Is anyone going to ask me if I want to play?” I teased, knowing my consent wasn’t necessary, though implied.
