THIRTY-TWO

Heart Stopping Turn

“Ihave gifts for thebabies and I’m dying to give them to them.” Paisley announced through the phone line with excitement. “But I want to wait until they are born.”

Joy spread through me at my best friend’s eagerness for the twins’ arrival. I was full term and Paisley called to catch up on the latest. She saw everything the tabloids posted, but knew to come to me for the truth. She knew the secrets and wouldn’t believe the made up lies. Hell, they didn’t even know the truth.

Dylan's father was actually the father of the twins. The hidden secret we had spent many times lost in each other’s arms. The untold truth of Dylan’s secret lover. A man.

I tried not to worry about it because stress wasn’t good for the twins. They could come any day and nothing could impede a hopefully smooth delivery. My babies were healthy and strong, just like their father. They would be home in no time.

“I’m sure they are fabulous.” I giggled at her willingness to be a part of their lives.

“They are! I have a cute pink dress for the girl and a sweet little tux to match for the boy.” Paisley beamed through my ear. “But have you figured out their names yet?”

“We actually haven’t. We can’t agree on their names.” I pouted. “I hope once I deliver them, we can come to an agreement after we see their sweet faces.”

Another thing we couldn’t decide on was our feelings for each other and it was depressing. I haven’t told Daxon I was in love with him because he was reluctant. He firmly stated he couldn’t give me his heart, and it has held me back. Deep down inside, I wonder if he knew how I felt, maybe it would change. He could open himself up to me and let me inside. We could be together and be a family.

“How is living with the famous billionaire bachelor Mr. Daxon Stark?” Paisley teased as she changed her tone and sarcasm filled her voice.

“It has been wonderful. He’s been caring and attentive. He’s going to be a great father, but...” I sighed as I looked down at my belly and rubbed the twins for comfort. “It feels like it’s all for the babies and not for me. I just wish he could show me that kind of affection.”

“Oh, I’m not so sure about that, Celeste. He moved you into his home and has done everything for you. He could’ve let you live in your own place and helped you. But a bachelor moved you in with him. It must mean there’s something more?” Paisley said reassuringly.

“I don’t know, Pais...” I sighed.

“Tell me one thing. Do you love him?” Paisley asked me, and I heard her suck in a breath.

My heart hammered in my chest. It felt like it would explode. Burst open with all the love I had for him. For a man I once viewed as the enemy and a cold-hearted bastard. He was far from it and a softie deep down. He was my everything.

“God help me, I love that man with all my heart.” I admitted the truth.

“Then you’ve got to tell him, Celeste!” Paisley exclaimed as she let out her breath and excitement filled the phone.

Suddenly, I heard the front door open, and keys jiggled. Daxon was home from work. It was now or never. My best friend was right, and this was it. My future depended on it and my babies deserved a family.

“I’ve got to run, Pais, Daxon just walked in.” I whispered into the phone and covered it with my hand. “Wish me luck.”

“Good luck, love you and go get your man!” Paisley yelled with excitement in my ear and I hung up the phone.

It was the perfect moment to confess my love.

My heartbeat wildly in my chest, and I walked towards Daxon with a smile on my face. It excited me for what could be, but I was nervous about the unknown. He could very well shoot me down and leave me shattered. But this could be it.

This could be destiny.

“So, I wanted to take you to your favorite restaurant in the city for dinner before the baby’s arrival.” Daxon breathed as he grabbed my jacket and urged me over. “The limousine is outside and we better hurry before someone else takes our reservation.”

His sweet gesture made my heart swell. He wanted to dine with me and feed me. But I needed to know the truth.
