“Tia, we need to leave, right now.”
“What is going on, Yefim?” I say, my heart beginning to beat faster and faster at this unknown danger he seems to be sensing.
He takes my drink from my hand and puts it on a nearby table. Then he takes my hand and pulls me towards the front door. He keeps watching his back, looking everywhere. I have no idea what is happening right now, but I just have to trust him.
I’m practically jogging to keep up with his long strides, and he is holding my hand so tightly it’s hurting.
Outside, he hurries over to where our car is parked and pulls the door open for me.
“Get in. Now. Quickly.” He is looking behind us towards the house.
I climb in without a word, my blood pumping loudly in my ears. He runs around the car and quickly gets into the driver’s side, starting the engine.
His wheels spin on the gravel of the driveway as he pulls out of the parking area, pushing the accelerator down hard as he heads for the gate to leave the property.
I don’t say a word. He is so focused on getting us out of here I’m too nervous to interrupt him.
The security guard opens the gates for us and Yefim breathes a sigh of relief, pulling away from the house into the public road. He floors the gas, screaming away from my graduation party.
Chapter 22 - Yefim
All I have to do is get her out of here.
I glance around the party, trying to spot the man she was talking to.
I never knew what he looked like until now. But I know his name.
I know his name all too well.
“Tia, we need to leave right now.”
“What is going on, Yefim?” she asks, nervously, looking around too and not understanding what has me so alert.
I don’t have time to explain anything right now.
I take her drink from her hand and dispose of it. It’s time to move.
I know I’m dragging her. I know I’m holding her too tightly. But I’m too worried to let her go. I can’t let anything happen to her, and right now, we are right in the fucking lion’s den.
Even when we’ve pushed through the crowd of graduates and made it outside, I still don’t feel relaxed. We are still on their property.
I yank her car door open.
“Get in. Now. Quickly.” I'm constantly watching my back, waiting for someone to run at us from behind. But so far, nothing.
It doesn’t mean we’ve escaped. Not until we get home and we are safely inside the house. Then I will make some phone calls.
I need to tell my brothers. But there is no time. Not now. Right now all I have to do is get Tia out of here.
I promised I wouldn’t let anything happen to her, and I plan to keep that promise.
Once she is in the car, I run to my side and climb in, still watching my back. I expect them to come out of nowhere and everywhere.
The engine growls to life and I skid on take-off, heading for the security gates.
I’m holding my breath as we near the gates. I’m waiting for the guard to pull a gun, tell us we can’t leave—something, anything—but he doesn’t. He just opens the gates, and we drive out.
I feel as though we’ve escaped death somehow.
