“I’m going to love you so much.” I whisper.

I wipe my tears and start up the truck.

“There’s just one slight glitch. We have to tell your daddy about you and I’m not sure how that will go because we’ve never spoken about children before. But don’t worry bean, whatever happens you will have me, I promise.”

Chapter Twenty-Two

I decide to cook Gaige and I a nice meal. I bake a Victoria sponge for dessert just like that night.

I’m so nervous I think I’m going to throw up, or is that part of the pregnancy? On my way home I swung by the pharmacist to pick up some pre-natal vitamins. There was a tiny little bib that had the Canadian flag on it and said ‘Canadian eh’. I had to buy it.

I look out of the window. I’m waiting for his truck to pull up. When I see it I squeal.

“Calm down Esme. Jesus, it’s not good for the bean. Is it?” I ask an empty room.

I hear him come up the stairs and I nibble on my thumb nail nervously. If I don’t tell him soon I won’t have a nail left.

He walks in and sniffs.

“Something smells good.” He states.

“I cooked us dinner and made us a dessert.” I say smiling.

He pulls me to him and kisses me.

“You should have been resting, but you actually look better.” He says opening the fridge and getting a beer. He hands me one.

“No thanks.” I state.

“You still not feeling right?” He asks.

“No I feel fine. I just don’t feel like a beer. Gives me gas.” I blurt.

Gaige’s lips twitch.

“I have some news to tell you later. Exciting news actually.” I ramble.

“Yeah? What is it?” He asks.

“Let’s wait until after dinner, save the best till last as they say.”

“Christ Esme. Whatever it is you’re wired like a coil.” He states smiling.

He kisses me softly.

“I could get used to coming home to you every day.” He says between kisses.

The timer beeps on the oven and I jump.

“Dinner is ready.” I sing.

I bring our food and place it on the table.

“Lasagne and homemade garlic bread.”

I sit down and we eat. We chat about his day. Then he asks about mine and I nearly choke on my food. After we’ve finished I bring out the Victoria sponge. Gaige smiles and winks.

“Ahh! My new favourite cake.” He winks.
