He nodded, looked at his phone and said, “I would suggest therefore that you conceived around three weeks ago.”

Our first time.

“I’ve been taking my contraceptive pill,” I said, more to myself than anyone else.

“Stop immediately but do not worry. Everything will be fine. You can speak to your own doctor about it, but I am sure they will give you the same information. Now, if you will forgive me, I must see another patient.” He turned to Elliot and Beau. “I think Mrs Fox should get some sleep now, so if you could leave her.”

“Sure,” Elliot said with a nod as the doctor left.

I must admit I did feel tired, but I wanted to see Ronnie. I was desperate to see him. Elliot and Beau looked at me. Beau raised an eyebrow while Elliot looked pensive.

“I need to see Ronnie. Jimmy has my phone, so I can’t call him. I need to talk to him.”

Beau nodded. “I think you do, sweetheart. El, we should go.”

“Will you be okay? Or do you want one of us to stay in case Jimmy comes back?”

“Can you tell the desk not to let him in?” I suggested. “I don’t want him in here.”

Elliot nodded. “With absolute pleasure.” He then passed me his phone. “Keep this and I’ll get Ron to call you as soon as we get back, I promise.”

“Please and thank you, so much.”

They both leaned in and kissed my cheek in turn and Beau gave me a wink. Once they were gone I closed my eyes, hoping that the next time I opened them Ronnie would be there.

CHAPTER41

RONNIE

Joey made sure I’d showered and had something to eat, the only thing I’d refused was to sleep. I couldn’t anyway, even if I’d tried. All I wanted to do was get back to the hospital and talk to Amber. I wanted to know what she wanted to do about the baby she was having with Jimmy. Did she want him to help her to raise it? Did she want to go back to him? What the hell had happened on that staircase? There was no way he’d only just got there like he said. I knew that he was involved somehow. I’d wanted to go to the police, but I knew I didn’t have any proof. Surely, Amber would have told them if it had been him, if she’d woken up.

What would it mean if she hadn’t woken up, though? Had she hurt herself more than the doctor had said? Christ, what if she didn’t wake up at all?

My thoughts were fucking spiralling and I needed to stop. I needed to do something more positive like going to see her. Snatching up my phone and my key card I headed for the door.

“Where are you going?”

Turning, I saw Joey lying on the sofa in my room. He was shoeless with his legs crossed and a pillow from the bed behind his head.

“I thought you’d gone back to your own room.”

“Nope. I knew you’d make a break for it.” He sat up with a yawn and scratched his chest. “I take it you didn’t sleep.”

“No. Making me shower and eat was enough. I’m going back to the hospital. Are you coming with me or not?”

He sighed and dropped his feet to the floor. “I don’t trust you to go alone, so yeah.”

“Why? What the hell do you think I’m going to do?”

“Deck Jimmy again for a start. Especially when you see this.” He pulled his phone from his jeans pocket, tapped on the screen and passed it to me. “Don’t blame the messenger.”

I grabbed his mobile and looked at the screen. “What the actual fuck!”

Budding rock star, Jimmy Fox, states that Warrior Creek’s Ronnie Dwyer has an unhealthy fascination with his wife, Amber Fox.

Onlookers witnessed Dwyer pushing Fox to one side when Amber had a serious accident at the prestigious German Rock Awards, last night.

Underneath it was the picture of me screaming that Jimmy had done something to her. I looked insane while Jimmy looked petrified. There was even a statement from a woman who said she’d seen Amber trip and fall. She also said that Jimmy appeared from the opposite direction and went straight to Amber only to be pushed away by me.
