“Why isn’t he waking up?”

I hear my father‘s rough voice but can’t open my eyes. Why can’t I open my eyes?!

I try to speak, but no words emerge.

Beep…beep…beep…

What the hell is that annoying sound?

“The accident he was in was pretty rough, Mr. Delacruz. Quite frankly, he’s lucky to be alive. I’ve never seen someone come out of an accident like this with only a few scrapes. He does have a concussion, but we aren’t sure what the effects of that will be until he wakes up.”

“I am awake!” I try to scream out loud, but I can’t.

I hear the sound of a woman sobbing before she asks, “What about the girl that was in the car with him?”

‘The girl?’ I think to myself.

Beep… beep…beep

“I’m so sorry to tell you, but she didn’t make it,” the man responds.

Beep… beep… beep

The sound of sobbing grows louder. It’s my mother.

“Ma’am, I must ask you to calm down while you're here. We don’t want to put any more stress on your son while his body tries to heal.”

Beep.. beep.. beep.. beep

“What’s going on Doctor?” I hear my dad ask.

“I’m not sure,” the doctor responds. “The machines are reading like he might be waking up. Who was the girl?”

“His girlfriend,” my dad replies gruffly.

Beep..beep..beep..beep

“Well, it’s best not to talk about her when he wakes up. His body seems to be having some sort of panic attack. Bringing her up may only cause more stress and delay the healing process.”

“Where is she?!” I try to scream, but nothing comes out.

Beep.beep.beep.beep.beep

I can feel my heart pounding in overdrive. “I need you to leave and wait in the waiting room!” the doctor yells.

Beep.beep.beep.beep.beep

No, don't leave me. Someone tell me where she is. Why can't I move? Why can’t I see anything?

Beeeeeeeep

“We have a code!” someone yells from far away. A shock jolts through me.
