Who was I kidding? I had no idea what I was doing.
My best chance of getting out was if my shadow could slip through a seam in the wall—but my silent companion was nowhere to be seen.
Had they warded the cells against demon magic somehow?
As I got closer to the glass, the lights beyond my cell flickered and burst into brightness, revealing a cell across from mine. The walls were the same reflective white material, bare and soulless.
In the middle of the room, curled into the fetal position, was a naked male demon with flaming red hair.
The same demon from my dreams.
Chapter Sixteen
He didn’t rouse when I stepped closer to the transparent wall and tapped my knuckles against the glass. With my fist still raised, I glanced over my shoulder, searching the corners of the room for cameras, but there were no obvious ones. That didn’t mean anything, though. The hairs on the back of my neck screamed that I was being watched and I was going to listen to my instincts.
Something inside of me was missing. Torn away. My shadow had been a constant nuisance since Mr. Bub stitched him to my feet. I hadn’t expected to actually miss the thing when he was gone. His absence was a great sucking hole in my chest that made me feel like I would never be warm again.
The cell felt exactly like my dream.
Had I connected with the demon in the next cell all those days ago? Could I connect with Legion and the others if I tried hard enough? Would Sev come to my dreams if I fell asleep?
When had I started to rely on other people? I wondered. I should have been trying to find a way out, but there was no obvious way I could see. I needed to bide my time. Save my strength and keep watch.
A low groan rattled the glass, and I froze as the demon began to unfurl himself. Every movement was jerky and reluctant. I watched as the red-headed male's limbs unfolded, revealing the rest of his pale naked skin. I couldn’t see his face, so I didn’t know if it was Mars or Quinn. Both had red hair, with vastly different features and builds.
Damn.
I should have looked away, but I couldn’t.
His eyes lifted to mine accusingly. Daring me to look away. Quinn. Heart-shaped face, copper begins of a beard.
I licked my lips.
His vivid green eyes narrowed. He said nothing as he stood up to his full height. His corded muscles were visible under the skin. He seemed to have no reaction to the fact he was naked, and I could see everyinchof him. I tried to ignore his cock, but it wasright there.
“Legion has been looking for you.” I continued.
Quinn narrowed his eyes. He said nothing as he cocked his head to the side and studied me like I was a butterfly in a jar.
“He’s been looking for both of you,” I said, glancing to the side, searching for another demon in the sparse cell though I knew I wouldn’t find one. “Do you know where you are?”
Quinn cocked his head to the side. “Who areyou?”
“My name is Alexis Boudaire. Legion hired me to find you and your brother. Do you remember what happened?”
The demon snorted, the sound full of derision. “If you knew who Legion truly was, you would know how preposterous that sounds.” He waved a hand in my direction. “I was taken from a bar in Gluttony. I don’t remember the name. Mars had left with a woman, some blonde thing with long legs. He wanted to soothe his pride after he could not procure the scepter.”
“That was what Trey said,” I told him.
I wasn’t sure what Sin Quinn belonged to—Envy or Greed. Quinn rubbed his chin, covered in a wiry beard the same color as his copper hair. “Whoever took us seems to have a personal vendetta. I’ve been rather uncomfortable since I arrived.”
“Do you know where your brother is?” I asked.
Quinn’s eyes turned haunted. “No.”
“Mars was lured out of the bar by a woman. Do you remember how they got you?”
Quinn shrugged. “Legion’s little girlfriend offered to drive me home. She was in the area. She brought me here instead. Not many sedatives work against demons; in fact, none of them do. I was rather surprised when I lost consciousness.”
