“He likes to hear himself speak.” Trey yawned. “I still think that Mars and Quinn ran off somewhere. We’ll find them naked and covered in feathers in a couple of days.”
My mind supplied a mental image of one of the videos I had seen the night before. Sev shot me a knowing look.
Legion stood up. “Alexis? A word in the hall?”
“Ichi,” Katalina whined.
“Sure.” I pushed my chair back to follow.
Katalina sunk back in her seat, crossing her arms over her chest as she watched Legion stroll around the side of the table and open the door for me.
I resisted the urge to put my thumb on my nose and sing ‘nanny-nanny-foo-foo,’ but only just.
Legion chose a door in the corridor, seemingly at random. Revealing a library more extensive than I’d ever seen.
“I swear this place is like a tardis,” I whispered, eying the stacks as Legion chose one of the worn sable Chesterfield armchairs in the middle of the room. I followed his lead and took a seat.
“You wanted to speak to me?” I allowed my arms to spread out on the armrests, feeling how the leather had gone soft from years of use. I held back a wince, knowing that I sounded like an employee about to be reprimanded—but I hadn’t been able to stop myself from needling Katalina.
The shadows closest to the stacks grew more prominent as they reached for me, like two ink blots connecting in water. My shadow slunk back to me, as innocent as could be.
I hadn’t even noticed its absence. What were you up to? I wondered.
When I looked up, Legion was watching me. Studying where my eyes had traveled. I felt he didn’t miss much, but I didn’t have it in me to explain.
“Sev told me about last night.” Legion knitted his fingers together, balancing his elbows on his knees as he led forward. His legs parted enough that I had to make an effort not to look at his crotch—especially when he wanted to talk about how I had been spying on him as he got his cock sucked.
My cheeks burned. “I didn’t mean to watch, I—”
Legion held up a hand. “About the dream.”
“Oh.” I blinked. “The dream.” I was glad he wasn’t discussing my voyeuristic adventures the night before.
Legion cocked his head to the side, staring at me as if he had never seen me before. “You saw a demon in your dreams. You believed that it was either Mars or Quinn.”
I described the demon with his red hair and honey eyes. Now that I had seen the videos of Mars’s apartment, I knew that Greed was the demon in my dream. Not Envy.
Legion nodded before standing up and pacing behind the chairs.
“I’ll need your help today,” Legion told me, pushing his fingers through his inky black hair.
“That’s what I’m here for.” My smile didn’t reach my eyes. “I want to find the missing demons. I’d also like to know who was responsible for the attack in the street yesterday.”
“You were stabbed,” Legion said flatly.
I rolled my eyes. “I know. I was there.”
“You should not have been a target.” He continued, pacing behind my chair. “What did you say when you want into the reception in the Magicktek building?”
Frowning, I thought back to the awkward conversation. Shifting in my chair, I gripped the armrests with my hands. “I didn’t really know what to say. You told me the demons' names. The ones that were missing. So, I asked at the reception desk. As soon as I said their names, I got the impression that the receptionist wanted me out of the building ASAP.”
Legion nodded as I spoke. “I didn’t expect you to be able to walk through their wards. I should have prepared you better.”
“Ya think?” both my brows disappeared into my hairline as I affected disbelief.
Legion ignored my sarcasm. Rolling his hand, he invited me to continue.
“That’s it,” I shrugged. “I got a pamphlet from one of the tables. It was something about cash for medical trials.”
