Blood.

“You did it,” I said so quietly I didn’t think he’d heard me, but I didn’t need his approval.

He was the bastard who’d thrown the blood on my bed. I could have bet my life on it.

Anger exploded in my temples. I started to stir again and wanted to scream, but I heard another voice.

“Hey, let her go!”

Joshua stopped, I wanted to shout for help, but my stupid voice wouldn’t cooperate while my head throbbed with pain.

I prayed it was Harris, but that voice didn’t seem to be his…. or maybe it was my dizziness.

“What the hell do you want?” Spoke Joshua, his anger vibrating on my back.

It clearly was not Harris, or his head would already be connected to the wall.

“I want you to let her go,” the unknown voice replied.

His tone was serious, angry even, but not as harsh or thick as Harris’, which exuded a sort of deadly calm that I could recognize anywhere, no matter how dizzy.

“She’s not well, I’m taking her to the nurse,” Joshua lied, trying to escape.

I wanted to scream in despair, to struggle against his grasp, but all I could do was cry. The tears fell unintentionally and uncontrollably from my eyes, and I hoped that they were enough for the stranger to save me. I was so weak that I couldn’t even lift my head. I hung heavily over Joshua’s shoulder, like a dead animal.

“And that is how you treat someone who is unwell?” the man wanted to know, “What’s wrong with her? What happened?”

“You know what? What the hell is your problem, toad eyes?” Joshua growled and turned.

“Toads have round eyes, mine are not like that,” the stranger clarified, unfazed by Joshua’s anger.

“Oh, really? I’ll make them for you.”

Suddenly I was thrown off his shoulder and onto my feet, but the idiot hadn’t realized I couldn’t stand up straight, so I lost my balance, fell, and hit my head, almost bringing me back to reality from the trance and unreal pain my need for drugs was causing. Two arms grabbed me by the waist but quickly disappeared, followed by sounds that must have come from powerful blows. I gritted my teeth and forced myself to get back to normal. My headache was still there, but I could control my eyes and see what was happening around me.

I turned my attention to the stranger fighting Joshua; I didn’t recognize him, but his features were unique. Either that, or I was having really bad hallucinations. He seemed bigger than Joshua, not very muscular, but with enough muscle to beat this asshole to a pulp.

He was wearing a brown leather jacket, and Joshua grabbed it to immobilize him, but he got punched in the face before he could do anything else. The sound of his teeth chattering was pure satisfaction.

Their agitation was soon heard by the students who came out of the classrooms to see what was going on. I didn’t know what was more shocking: their fight or me lying on the floor.

I felt some arms around me and heard unknown voices calling my name

When I turned my head, I noticed Kristen and V next to me. They probably had class on the same floor, which iswhy they reached me first, but soon the whole school would be rallying around us. I really was a magnet for trouble.

“Oh, God, Kath, are you okay?” Kristen asked, and her voice sounded scared.

I noticed V’s gaze turn to Joshua.

The fight was over, and I sighed with relief when I saw Joshua lying on the floor, even though I didn’t like the fact that my savior would get in trouble for it.

I looked at him as he turned towards me and only now realized what was so striking about him. I knew him, we had two classes together. He was the new guy; the Japanese guy Kristen had fallen head over heels in love with. I had hoped that he would get out of it as easily as Harris had.

As a reflex to my thoughts, I heard that voice I already knew I’d recognize anywhere.

Harris’ voice, calling my name.

I didn’t have time to turn my head before I felt him beside me as he dropped to his knees, took my face in his palms and fixed me with his eyes. Those eyes that had remained green and were now full of fear and confusion.
