Harris came out and walked straight towards me. I don’t know what I looked like, but something scared him. I sidestepped him before he could reach for my hand.

“If you know what’s good for you, you’re leaving right now!”

“Katherine, please, get in the car.”

He’d used the word “please”? That was new. How could he make such a serious face after such a stupid joke.

I wouldn’t have gotten in his car even if he’d poured hot wax on me, but I was in the mood to throw a massive tantrum and I didn’t want to be seen by all the people who knew my dad.

Full of rage, I got into the car and slammed the door as hard as I could.

A FAILED SECOND TRY

He followed me into the car and settled into the driver’s seat but didn’t drive away yet as he seemed to analyze the parking lot.

“What did he look like? The guy following you.”

I pulled my hood over my head and growled at him.

“Enough of this, Harris! I know it was you! I know you like to annoy me, but I didn’t think …”

He reached out and stroked my cheek, his gesture disarming me a little.

“I know I do a bunch of stupid shit, but I swear it wasn’t me.”

“Then how did you know I was here? I didn’t tell you on the phone.”

“Ty traced the call. You saw all the computers in the garage, he’s very good at that sort of thing. And I’m sorry I took your phone number without asking you, but I was pretty sure you wouldn’t give it to me willingly.”

I wanted to argue further, but something in his eyes made me hold my tongue as his hand gently stroked my cheek.

“I promise it wasn’t me, but I want to know who did it. Are you sure you were followed?”

Before he could blow my brain to pieces, I pulled away from his touch.

“I can’t trust you, Harris. I’ve only known you for two days.”

“You didn’t answer my question. Are you sure you were being followed?”

I ran my fingers through my wet hair, sighed and closed my eyes.

“I’m not exactly thrilled to know you so well from behind either,” I scoffed and squinted.

I waited for his specific smirk to appear, but he just looked thoughtful, then turned his attention to the people coming out of the store.

I let out a tired sigh. “Oh, come on, Harris, cut the crap. You had a leather jacket on so I couldn’t see your tattoos, but I saw your hair before you got in the car.”

He had a T-shirt on now, but the rest of his outfit was identical.

His face turned to me in a flash.

“My hair?”
