He was crying.

Surrounded by darkness, without sobs, so quietly that I hadn’t heard him. The tears of a demon. A demon who, for the first time in his life, felt the consequences of the destruction he had caused.

“Whatever happens to us from now on, Katherine, whatever decision you make, I want you to know that this was real. For me, it was and is the most real thing I have ever felt. I loved you from the moment I first saw you, but I proved it to myself when you left my side, when your absence felt like pure agony. I know who and what I am, it’s too late to change it now. I would, if I could, give up my entire past so I could love you like a normal person.”

I stopped breathing, I could only feel his breath on my lips as he hugged me tighter.

“I can only offer you the love of a criminal, a monster. Dirty, dangerous, bloody, but,” he took my face in his hands, “I want you to know that no one will ever love you the way I love you. In my inferno, you are the angel I will protect at the cost of my life, and I will unleash hell on anyone who dares to come after my angel again. I swear it.”

I was crying too, but I only realized it when he wiped away my tears.

I had to tell him, I couldn’t put it off any longer, I should have told him from the start.

“Harris...”

My whisper faded as his phone buzzed next to my thigh.

Harris sighed and looked at me, then he picked it up and I saw Jay’s name flash on the screen.

“Answer it before he comes barging in here,” I encouraged him.

He sighed again and then answered the phone. It was so quiet I could hear Jay’s voice.

“You okay, bro?”

“Yeah, I am just hanging out here for a bit. I’m with Katherine.”

“Ah, okay, just checking up on you.”

“Since you called, make yourself useful and bring us some clothes. Ours are wet.”

“So why don’t you...”

“Jay,” Harris interrupted, slightly annoyed.

“What?”

Harris expelled a breath, and I giggled.

“Get V on the phone.”

There was a muffled sound, then V’s voice.

“Reporting for duty,” she greeted.

“I need some clothes from my room, and something from you for Kath.”

“Right away,” I heard her giggle before Harris hung up the phone.

I raised an eyebrow. That was more like it, Spikey Boy could have been tutored by his girlfriend.

“What were you going to say earlier, baby?”

Oh, just that I already love you more than anything in the world and would probably be willing to die for you any day.

“Nothing important, let’s get out of here first.”

I felt him smile and he kissed me. V came out of the house, holding some folded clothes.
