My hands itched to strangle him. We had just stepped outside. I knew I had to go back inside; I just didn’t want to. Yet.

“Me and Alaric will run to get a bite to eat. You guys said you weren’t hungry so want to meet at your lockers?” I nodded. My mind was too wound up to go into the cafeteria.

I took the opportunity once we were at the lockers, waiting for Dex and Alaric to message Ivy. I really hoped she wrote back this time. How were we supposed to move on if she wasn’t around?

Me: Good news. The huge attack on the slaves is a scare tactic and possibly a distraction. Since he’s being paranoid, I don’t have anyone close to him to know why he needed a distraction. We need to stick together just in case.

My eyes widened when the little icon switched to read. My smile widened, on the inside, I didn't want to actually smile and draw attention to myself. Bones had already shooed away ten people who tried to get close to us.

The bubbly feeling of excitement it caused wasn’t unpleasant just weird.

My Poison: Good to know.

Seriously?

I scoffed at her fucking answer. When she didn’t say anything else for a few seconds, I put down my wrist. Why was she so frustrating? Women literally throw themselves at me every day like the redheaded chick slowly making her way to me. But the only woman I wanted, ignored me because I wanted her safe.

Her eyes constantly scanned the area, looking for my mate. Bones growled at the woman, and like a coward, she ran away. When he met my gaze, I gave him a nod to thank him. No one had time for stupid people who thought they’re important.

“Do you think Ivy will be in classes today?” Bones asked as the other two finally appeared down the hall.

I shrugged, hoping she would be. I needed to see her stubborn ass even if it was from a far. If she’d stop using magic,I’d follow her in the shadows. I wasn’t too proud to stalk my mate.

CHAPTER NINE

KAIN

“Did you hear that patches of Hell are healing? The red sand vanished and the crazy ass plants started to grow? Do you think it’s true? I haven’t heard of anything growing near here in forever,” one professor whispered to another, their attempt at secrecy failing. No one else cared enough to listen outside of class.

Inside the classroom, the professors were notorious for punishing students who didn’t listen, often with brutal methods, so everyone paid attention. Outside that environment, however, they preferred to be left alone. Most of the staff were here as punishment from Lucifer, who ensured they taught their students but couldn’t harm anyone without cause. If they broke even a small rule, their curses would cause them harm. They avoided messing with more powerful demons, but everyone else was fair game. So, grades and attendance mattered here.

The fact that Ivy didn’t make it to her classes, again, worried me. My senses were in overdrive to hopefully pick up her trail. I hated when she did shit like this. Couldn’t she just let me know she was safe?

“Meet you at the lockers, again,” Alaric said. Dex followed him. Those two were hungry today. Probably because they werehappy again after tasting our mate last night. I’d barely had a kiss from Ivy’s plush lips, but I understood how she made everything in the world feel right. I didn’t blame them. Food probably tasted better now.

I was fucking jealous, though. Would that ever be me? Would I ever be that happy where food tasted mouthwateringly delicious?

All these changes were happening, and I felt like I was getting left behind. Why? I had no idea because I knew my bond group would never abandon me, especially my brothers, but I couldn’t stop the feeling eating away inside of me.

I didn’t use my stone locker, but Trigger kept a lot of potions in there, so he loaded up as we waited. The clanging of bottles as Trigger shoved them in his special bag—one that would protect the glass of the vials—had my eyebrow twitching. I leaned against my locker and shut my eyes.

My deep breath was cut off by a burgundy skinned man with a nose almost as wide as his lips, screaming. He ran toward me his demon making his five seven hight into at least six two, but I was taller than his demon as well at six foot six. I sighed.

The only thing that made me hesitate about calling a shadow was the fight going on inside of him which was evident on his strained face.

Trigger didn’t have any such hesitation. He flipped a blade in his hand ready to throw it, but I lifted mine to stop him. He gave me an irritated scoff.

Don’t kill him. He can’t help it. His demon is forcing him to attack because he senses my strength. Look at his face.

Trigger heard me, but his desire to throw the blade had him shifting his target and flinging it at a Master demons hand that was resting on the wall. I ignored the demon’s shouts. He was one of the male demons who made his slave eat dog food. I didn't care if he got hurt.

The man who charged me met the back of my hand. He crashed to the floor. When his eyes narrowed, ready to attack again, I let my magic hit him this time. He stammered and instantly relax. His demon recognized its superior.

Others gave me a wide berth in fear. I really hoped this wasn't an indication of how today would go. Because it sucked.

The hallway buzzed with life, but everyone’s distance made waiting bearable. I should do this more often. Why suffer when I could force people to stay away?

Because you aren’t your father,a voice in the back of my mind whispered. True. The Devil rule by forcing his will onto everyone. I didn’t want to do that.
