Chapter
Twenty-Two
Ilanded in my room where Beaut was snoring in my bed. Thankfully, she was alone. The window had a new black-out curtain over it to block out the sun. It was still early in the morning, even though it felt like days had gone by since leaving the Florence’s house. I undressed, grabbed my favorite crystal to change my body into my fluffier one for comfort, and climbed into bed. I didn’t want to be the Blood Widow right now.
Tomorrow, I’d move into a new place. Regardless of if Cole came knocking at my door, which I knew he would. With Brian gone and the threat to my life breathing down my neck, I needed to make changes. The first one was to move to a place with better defenses. However, that was the future Novem’s problem.
Sleep gripped onto me as soon as my head hit the pillow. It felt like only seconds before little hands were on my face.
“Wake your saggy tits up. You sleep like the dead. Someone’s pounding on the door.”
My sleepy mind registered what Beaut said. My body was lagging on the memo, though.
The banging erupted again. Damn, I was going to fucking kill whoever was at the door. My head hit the pillow, then thethought registered. Was it the guys? My eyes shot open, and my heart hammered against my chest.
There was no way I could run this time. I bet the apartment and windows were even charmed. Dominic was smart and his magic was strong enough to do it.
I scrambled to my feet and grabbed the gun under my pillow. Just in case it wasn’t them. I had a lot of enemies and knocking on my door could be a distraction or something.
“Jesus saggy labia, why are you in your underwear with me in the bed?” Beaut’s screech hurt my ears.
I scowled at her. “Shush. I can’t sleep in bottoms. Get out of here. I’ll let you know what happens later.”
“And miss all the fun?” She snapped her fingers and a huge butcher’s knife that was bigger than her appeared in her hands. She held it like a baseball bat. “Naw, I want to play as well.”
“Creepy,” was all I said. But I was grateful. She’d be a good distraction if it was the guys.
“You shut that cum hole and open the door. I’ll cut through their ankles. Then, they’ll be on my level.” The excited gleam in her eyes sent shivers down my body. I might be a tad bit psychotic, but I wasn’t the only one.
I tiptoe-ran to the door. Beaut’s slippers scuffed the floor.
“Now is not the time for cute, loud slippers,” I hissed at her.
She scowled at her feet and at me. She shrugged and started hopping around to get them off.
I rolled my eyes. “Need help?” I offered.
Her scowl only darkened. “Keep your shit-covered hands away from me. I’m capable of taking off my slippers.” One flew to the side, and the other flew in the air. She aimed her self-righteous stare my way.
Rolling my eyes again, I kept walking. The pounding kept up. My neighbors probably had rage seizures by now.
With the threat on me so real, I wasn’t going to look through the peephole to see who was at my door. That was a good way to get shot. I knew better than anyone; I’ve done it before. The killing part, not the dying.
I counted to three and opened the door just as the new set of knocking started. Then, I pointed and shot. Hands slapped the gun to the right, so the bullet went wide. I relaxed and smiled.
My nerves calmed. Some people had passcodes, mine was a pass gesture. If you weren’t fast enough to not get shot, you shouldn’t be at my doorstep. The wall I just shot was magically protected. And the scowling man in front of me was definitely good enough.
His eyes ran over my almost naked form. Shit, I didn’t think this through.
“You’re not leaving without me,” he grumbled. I still had on my fluffier body, so he knew I planned on meeting with people today. I would give my apartment to a group that needed it. They would know the risks, but I was sure they could handle themselves if vampires came sniffing around. Besides, their smells would mask mine eventually.
“Aaah!” Beaut charged.
The first swing would have cut him if I hadn’t pushed him back.
“It’s okay. Stand down, killer,” I told her.
She huffed, threw her hands up, but nodded. “Pity, I really wanted to kill him.” She flung her green bangs out of her face and sauntered back inside. The large weapon on her shoulder.
