“You’re so beautiful, even when you let your pettiness get the best of you, little demon.” Dominic sounded sated like we just fucked. Not like I tore at his flesh and took tons of his blood.
It pissed me off. I didn’t want to please him. My smile fell.
“Shut the fuck up, or I’ll call your blood to me and get rid of you.” The threat felt empty, and he knew it. I wouldn’t kill these assholes unless I had to, but I was going to get my revenge. I was too petty to let it go.
He nuzzled against my cheek reading what I was thinking on my face. “I look forward to playing this game with you, Sweet Treat. Like I said, I don’t mind a little pain with my chase.”
“Don’t call me that,” I said as Marcus opened the car door to grab a crying Brian. The little girl stayed curled into a ball. My heart sunk to the ground. She couldn’t be more than three years old.
Before I could get antsy because we were getting close, Ezra pulled up, stopping with a loud squeal of his tires. Marcus cursed and threw Brian to the ground at his feet, knocking him out. I could barely see him.
Ezra hopped out of his huge, lifted truck. His stance was fierce and ready for a fight. His men plus Cole hopped out of the back of the truck at the same time with weapons in their hands.
Marcus lifted his hands into the air with his palms out as if Ezra was the police. His stance was rigid but strong. “What’s going on? You know you’re not welcome here. This is demon territory.”
Ezra laughed but there was no humor in it. “I’m one of the families in charge of this city, boy. Don’t pretend you have any power here.” The growl that came off of Ezra would have made a grown man pee his pants.
Marcus backed up a few steps. The tension in the air was so thick it could have been sliced with a knife. “Okay, okay. What do you want? Free pussy?”
I wrinkled my nose. It would be a good cover, but my stomach tightened at the thought of him with a prostitute.
Dominic chuckled softly behind me. “What would you do if he said yes?”
I pinched him as hard as I could, but it just made him grip my breast harder. “Think what you want. I’m just waiting for the prick to move away from Brian. I don’t want him to sense my magic. I can’t mask it if I’m portaling someone. It will take a few minutes for my signature to dissipate.”
Ezra stepped closer to Marcus and his men followed his lead. The man that killed Marcus before stepped out of the building. My worry rose, he was smart and acted like a higher up in the gang.
Their people moved closer to Marcus, backing him up and giving him more confidence. He walked up to Ezra, the others onhis heels, leaving me the opening I needed. I called on my portal magic and begged for it to listen to me and appear under the girl. The image of my soft bed played in my mind as the yellow circle materialized above her head. Not close enough for her to fall in quickly.
“Stupid magic,” I grumbled, making Dominic chuckle again.
Instead of using my telekinesis to push her and risk others tracing it, I had to wait.
Seconds went by before she was out of sight. Sighing, I focused on Brian.
“Wait,” Dominic said.
I immediately paused at his command. I was working with tunnel vision. All I could think about was getting the kids out. I hadn’t noticed the other demon that had killed Marcus last time circling the van. “Shit, get rid of him before he warns the others, or we’ll never get Brian out without a fight.”
We needed to prevent a war. Killing a demon on their own territory would be bad. Especially with Ezra here, but what choice did I have?
I opened my mouth ready to call on the guys blood and kill him when Cole came up next to him. “Don’t you know it’s rude to walk away from one of the leading families. It could be taken as a threatening gesture. Get your ass back over there, or I’ll shoot. You could be going for a weapon.”
That meant Cole had every right to kill him. I held my breath to see what he’d choose. A few more steps and he’d see the girl missing.
The guy lifted his hands in a non-threatening gesture. “You’re right. My deepest apologies,” he said, though his tone said he really meant ‘fuck you.’
I didn’t care. He was moving away from the van.
When he was back at Marcus’ side, I called on another portal and this time the yellow magic swirl appeared below Brian.Closing my power off and saying the spell to keep anyone from following them, I let out a deep breath. We had done it. Now we just needed to get away from here before they realized the kids were gone.
Chapter
Thirty-Three
Iportaled Dominic and I back to the roof. Cole was watching for us, so as soon as he saw us appear, he gave the signal to Ezra.
Whatever it was, I didn’t stay to watch. I elbowed Dominic in the ribs the moment we landed. He doubled over with a groan.
