I feared I no longer had a mate, due to the heinous acts of these men; I could no longer feel Ashton through our mate bond. I would have thought it was part of the drug they gave me that didn’t allow me to reach my beast, but I had seen my mate’s body after the crash and feared it for that the reason. He hadn’t moved, and there was so much blood. I had a piece of him in my womb, though, and I vowed to keep our child safe no matterwhat. Hopefully, the crash hadn’t taken that away from me as well.
I heard movement in the hallway, and the door opened, revealing the two guards who had been checking in on me periodically. I couldn’t believe these were the guys who had taken me and were responsible for all of this. Although big and imposing, they lacked a few brain cells and didn’t seem to know what to do with me once they had me.
“The witch will be here soon to strengthen the memory spell so he won’t remember anything. Then we can drop him off in the city, and it will just look like amnesia from the accident.” The one guard stood near the doorway of the room I was being held in, his partner in crime in the hallway.
“Did the boss tell you anything else?” the hallway guard asked the bedroom guard. “He just told me to look out for anything suspicious and to get him from his bedroom if we needed him. Thenhe went to take a nap.”
Seriously? Who was this creep, and how was he powerful enough to have goons working for him if he could take a nap in the middle of a kidnapping?I bet this would be hilarious if it weren’t happening to me. The bumbling goons and the big boss fall because they have more brawn than brains.
“Just that he heard from the witch that this guy’s bodyguard didn’t die in the crash.” The bedroom guard’s words had me sitting up straighter.
I told you Mate would be okay.
Relief spread to me as my lion rubbed it in that he knew our mate wouldn’t have died but would instead come to save us. I didn’t care if he wanted to preen; I was just glad my beast was back, and I would see Ashton again. And I knew I would because there was no way he wouldn’t be here soon to rescue me. I just needed to sit back and wait.
Bang!
A loud noise distracted both guards. It sounded like something had dropped downstairs, but we were all up here.
“What was that?” the bedroom guard asked “Could the witch have come in?”
“I didn’t think the boss gave her a key to the cabin, but I’ll go check,” hallway guard said. “Keep the omega in here and lock the door if you have to leave him alone. We don’t want him getting lost.”
I rolled my eyes. I’d already tried getting out of the bonds they had me in. Even my powers couldn’t untie them. If I could have,I would have been out and gone already because these guards sucked, and the boss was too busy napping, apparently.
As the hallway guard went to investigate, the bedroom guard stood by the door, and I closed my eyes to see if I could feel my mate. That is when I knew that I was almost out of here. Ashton was close by. I could feel the pull of the mate bond, and my lion could link with his dragon.
Mate.
My lion purred through the link.
Coming.
His dragon was short on words, but those were the best words I had heard in a while. My baby and I would be safe. My mate would ensure it.
Boom!
An explosion shook the floor, and my guard ran down the stairs, leaving the door to the room open. See, that one was a few brain cells short. But it wouldn’t matter anyway. Ashton would get me soon, door open or locked.
“What was that?” The boss came into my room. “Where are the guards?”
“They went to investigate.” There was no point in ignoring him. Besides, maybe if I spoke with him, he wouldn’t noticethe figures in the hallway holding up the sign for me to remain silent.
“I’m sure it was just the witch. I did give her a key so she wouldn’t have to ring the bell. I may have forgotten to tell them.”
How did this guy run an operation where he was feared and obeyed? He seemed like a complete idiot to me.
“Don’t worry. You can return home once she strengthens the spell and ensures no one can uncross it. And I heard that the guard watching you at the safe house is fine. They will think you wandered from the scene of the accident and have amnesia.”
“Why are you telling me this if I’m not going to remember?” I really wanted to know why he bothered telling me his plans.
“I don’t really know. I guess I don’t have to.” The man laughed and sat on the edge of the bed. “I am sorry I had to scare you before. I just can’t let anything bring me down. You were a threat to that. Luckily, the witch knew what to do, so we didn’t have to kill you. Believe it or not, I hate killing people I don’t have to.”
“You killed Harvey though.”
“I did.” He nodded and flashed me a smirk. “But that was because he stole from me and tried to hide. If he had come clean on his mistake the first time, I would have figured out a less permanent punishment. Instead, he continued to take money that wasn’t his and then decided to run. Unfortunately, he trusted friends who weren’t loyal, and I learned about the plan. You were a wrench in that plan. That is why everything was fucked-up, and the spell was weak. We weren’t prepared for you and had to act in the moment.”
“Since I won’t remember anyway, can I have your name? I really hate just thinking of you as the goon’s boss, in my head.” I figured, why not get confirmation of who my mate was about to take down?
