“Okay, I’ll call you later.” I disconnected and scanned the area.

The sign readingDumbassheld by my old colleague from GSC stood out in the crowd.

Zander was now married to Rayne, my mate’s brother. Did that make us some family?

Content with the fact that my friend picking me up meant I had more time to figure out how my reunion with Wolf would go, I let Zander enclose me in his welcoming embrace.

“How have you been?” He pulled away and grabbed my bag.

“Pretty good. But I hear that things are even better for you.”

“This last year has been a whirlwind, but I loved every moment.”

“I missed you at headquarters and partnering up. But I am excited about all the new changes in your life.”

“Besides, I still do a few things with GSC.” Zander led me to the doors. “I just have much more work to do with the training center and leading the clan.”

“How is all that going?” I followed him toward the parking lot.

“The clan is pretty self-sufficient for the day-to-day tasks, honestly. There have been a few disputes I had to moderate, but mostly they function well with little stress laid on me.”

“And the training center?”

“That took a lot of energy and time to set up. But now we have a good flow, and the other trainers can extinguish most fires.”

“Literally and figuratively, I hear.” I chuckled, thinking about the stories going around about his brother and the multiple accidents he had caused since his training began several months ago.

“That’s getting better, too. Last week there were only two explosions, and my brother only caused one. If the attacks would stop, I could relax.”

“Well, that’s why I’m here. We’ll catch whoever is behind the assaults and then you can take that mate of yours on a much-needed vacation.”

“I bet Wolf would jump at the chance to babysit for us while we are gone.”

“He does that a lot?” My curiosity was piqued by this new knowledge regarding my mate.

“Every chance he gets.” Zander eyed me with a smirk. “Maybe you can stick around and finally give him a chance?”

“That’s part of the reason I came.”

“You finally realized running wasn’t the answer?”

“Something like that. Now, I must figure out what to say to Wolf.”

Zander stopped at his car and looked directly at me. “Just be honest with him. But remember that even if you didn’t mean to, you caused him pain this last year. Make sure to let time heal that hurt.”

Zander placed my bag in the trunk of his black sedan, and we began the forty-five-minute drive to the facility. I spent most of that time thinking about my mate. We had to heal our wounds together. Maybe I could join Zander as a freelance GSC agent in a few months and work at the training center with my mate.

As we neared the training center, I wanted to gather more information. When I saw Wolf tonight, the case would be the last thing on my mind until tomorrow morning’s meeting.

“I read over some of the files Jesse provided so I have the basics. I want to hear more from you since you’ve been on the scene during the attacks.”

“Whoever’s doing this has to have a personal tie to one of us at the center.” Zander shrugged his shoulder. “Something tells me that they’re not trying to go after the facility or files. The energy has the signature of a personal attack.”

“Have you explored that theory a little bit more?”

“Not too much.”

“Why not?” I asked, surprised he hadn’t dug further into where his intuition was leading him.
