He jumped and put distance between us, looking down at me. That was easy for him. He was tall, as tall as the Anubis, only he looked Bastet. I didn’t recall seeing anyone like him around the palace.
My knees and palms hurt and blood ran from the scratch on my neck. Even though my body was not seriously hurt, my ego was bruised as fuck.
“You tried to kill me twice. How about you introduce yourself at least?”
“Hass.”
“Hass?”
“I don’t have time for introductions. Let’s move. Keep up.”
Hass walked through the thick trees so fast that I could barely keep up. My face was flush. My heart beat like crazy and my eyes slipped to his ass that looked so delicious. What was wrong with me? I turned from a virgin into this sex-starved female. Maybe it was the sun, the food, or the climate. My body asked me for pleasure and, as I promised myself, I’m going to take pleasure from wherever I can.
Focused on his ass, I missed the moment he stopped and stumbled against his strong body.
“Can you at least pay a little attention to what happens around you?”
“I’m here already.”
He moved to the side and showed me an incredible array of weapons. Most of them looked so alien I couldn’t even figure how to hold them without cutting off a few of my fingers.
“We have to start.” Hass moved lightning fast and aimed one of the weapons at me.
“Dead space rats, easy with that. You could cut off something!”
“You should know how to block this.”
My eyes slid over the weird looking sword. It had holes for his fingers and laid perfectly in his hand. He swooshed it through the air. Hass moved faster. The sword became a blur in his hand. He stopped, the edge of the blade an inch from my nose.
“You try.”
Okay, Sky. Breathe.
“You didn’t ask for my name.”
“I don’t need to know your name. I know you’re going to die in the Games.”
“That makes me feel warm and fuzzy.” It kinda did make me feel warm and fuzzy, especially when Hass stepped behind me, pressing his body against mine. His leg kicked my legs wide apart.
“Open your legs. You need to be stable. Now, grab the sword.”
Hass put the sword into my left hand. I stuck my fingers through the holes. It was so big and heavy. I could barely hold it up.
“Can I use my right hand?”
“No. Your right hand is for this.” A shield hit me full on my right shoulder.
“Ouch. I wasn’t prepared for that.”
He lifted his arms in exasperation. His handsome features looked stern. He reminded me of a lion about to pounce on his prey.
“This is what’s wrong with you. You’re unprepared. You crashed here and don’t know anything.”
“And you’re a horrible teacher. I didn’t ask for your help. I can learn whatever I can by myself. At least I won’t be cut and bruised. I’ve always survived and I’m determined to survive this shit, too.”
Hass stopped in front of me, his arms crossed over his chest. “Understood. How about you pick a weapon you like and would like to learn?”
I stared at him, expecting to be hit, bit, or scratched. Not that I didn’t enjoy that love bite he gave me on my neck. Even the drops of blood were exciting in a way. Hass’ eyes fixed on the small drops of blood that stuck to my now tanned skin. I have never been so tanned in my life. Just this morning I took a moment to admire the way I looked.
