“If my mother’s an Angel and lives in Heaven, I can’t see her. Now I get it. She believed I was a mistake, and my Dad tried to protect me.”

“You don’t know until you don’t know.”

“That sounds funny and doesn’t make sense.”

“Well, think about it. You believe you know things, but you don’t until you don’t find them out.”

“Jacks, what about the engagement? I’m sure you know I need to marry Caspian.”

“Did you call my name?” The damn Demon appeared out of nowhere. “Silver walked away and I was worried. Don’t worry. I’ll go to the hotel. I need some sleep. Will you give my thanks to Lilith, please?”

“Silver, I’m not leaving you alone.”

I grabbed her arm. Maybe I was brash, or perhaps I touched her too hard because Silver flinched under my touch. Her leather jacket was between us.

“Let her go!” Caspian yelled at me. What happened next was all instinct. I turned toward him and punched Caspian in his smug, handsome face. He cracked his neck and stood there, his body covered in ink.

I wanted to beat that smug smile off his damn face. Now! I couldn’t stop myself and punched him again. His jaw felt like iron and there was not one drop of blood, even though my knuckles were bleeding.

“See, I tried to be friendly, nice and all. But you’re asking for it.”

Caspian turned to me. His fist hit my face, and I felt a crack. What the fuck. Was he made of iron?

River ran from the house and jumped Caspian. There was so much tension. The hate floated between the Demon and us. Still, I’m ashamed to admit that Caspian was stronger than me, even with River’s help. His fists struck me. My face broke open. Blood streamed from the wounds. There was not enough time for my shifter body to heal.

A high-pitched scream shocked us all and made the blows on my face stop.

Lilith stood there.

I fainted. Fuck.

Caspian

My ears started to bleed. This was one of Lilith’s talents I found especially annoying and upsetting. She could break glass with that call.

The mongrel was down, too. Not that I minded. Silver wasn’t in danger, but I felt the need to get the damn mongrel away from my girl.

“Oh, you’re impossible,” yelled Silver. “Fuck both of you! Bye, Lilith!”

Silver left. I knew the hotel she stayed at, but thinking of her alone on the streets made me nervous.

Lilith walked over and slapped me

Hard.

“Ouch! Why did you do that?”

“Caspian, you know I care about you, but you act like a boy. Apologize to Jacks and the pack. They were only protecting Silver.”

Lilith stood there like a school mistress, her arms crossed.

I turned toward Jacks and stretched out my hand. “Sorry, man.”

Jacks grabbed my hand and I stared into the wolf’s eyes. For the first time, I saw him, a good guy.

“Can you go see after her?” he asked. “I’m in no shape, and I hate to think of her alone out there.”
