I allowed myself to melt into the memory of the afternoon. I touched the key that hung around my neck, knowing that River waits for me to allow him pleasure. A sudden movement woke me from my reverie. I was back in the car. I peered out the window. The night was dark, but streetlights made New Orleans look like the party place it was. People drove and walked on the streets of the French Quarter.

“Silver? Silver?”

Jacks repeated my name. I replied with an absent, “Huh?”

“Silver, are you engaged to that guy, that Demon?”

Sadness was painted on his face. “Jacks, what do you want me to tell you? Yes, he’s my fiancé, but I never met him, not before today.”

“I understand,” he said, his voice cold and distant. Jacks looked back to the road again.

River, Drae, and Preach rode in the other car.

“I asked you to be honest to me, Silver.”

“And I am.”

“You never said you had a fiancé.”

“Because it wasn’t important. It’s not important. I want to find out what’s going on with those shifters. They don’t act normal.”

“Maybe you should ask your fiancé, Caspian.”

“Jacks, that was mean. Why are you implying my fiancé is involved. He was attacked the same way I was.”

“We lost the witch because of those crazy mutant shifters. She ran away. Lilith is our only hope.”

I chewed on my lower lip. Knowing Lilith was my last hope didn’t fill me with warmth and confidence. Quite the contrary.

Lilith’s house is a gorgeous colonial mansion surrounded by an elegant garden. Lilith made a good life for herself. It was awesome if you needed her to help you find a new outfit or arrange a visit to the hairdresser, or even take you to a party. But for Demons like Lilith, time passed differently.

We stopped in front of her house.

Caspian’s BMW was already parked there. Of course, he drove a brand-new black BMW X6. Such a Demon mobile. I rolled my eyes so hard I could almost hear them roll into the back of my head.

A knot formed in my belly because, damn, Caspian was hot. His chest and neck were covered in black and white tattoos. He could touch me and even kiss me. My shield was useless around him. It was exciting.

The moment I stepped out of the car, Caspian appeared out of the darkness. That was another Demon thing, to appear as if we were born out of the shadows.

“Silver.” His deep voice resonated inside my body, making me shiver in a way I hated. I wanted to obey him yet hated myself for it. There was a tug, like a pull. “I want to have a word with you.”

Jacks stepped next to me, his shoulder blocking me.

“Alone,” Caspian said, measuring the other guys. Caspian was as tall as Jacks, and they both had a powerfully built body. I could see their chests puffing.

“Jacks, I’ll be okay. Wait for me inside, please.”

“Be a good puppy,” Caspian added, sarcasm dripping from his voice.

Jacks pivoted on his heel, and he was about to pounce on Caspian. I stepped between them.

“Can you two do the peeing contest later? We have some shit to manage right now. I’m getting a migraine from so much toxic masculinity.”

Jacks growled. Caspian had a sarcastic smile plastered over his face.
