I crashed on the carpet next to her, my gloved hand holding hers.

“Wow, that was....” Silver’s whisper trailed off.

“Silver, what would happen if we used a condom?”

“My body would burn you. I can’t risk it. But this, Jacks. I’ve never been so intimate with anyone, ever. This was so good. My knees are wobbly.”

“I want to kiss you.”

“I know. I can sense you.”

“Do you sense that as if string connects your heart with mine? I’d do anything for you.”

I glanced into her eyes and knew she understood.

Silver jumped up and pulled a t-shirt over her head. “I have to shower. And I’m sure the guys are worried.”

My first instinct was to pull her into my arms, but she stepped to the side. I didn’t care that I would be badly burned. Silver disappeared into the bathroom. I wanted her back here with me.

“Silver, this… you and I… it is something special.”

“Jacks, you’re hot and we had fun, but don’t fall in love with me. I’m not the right person. I’m not even a person. I’m a Demon.”

“Don’t push me away.”

“I… we had fun, okay. Can we keep it that way? We’re from two different worlds, literally.”

“I don’t care. You’re the one I want.”

Silver peered through the bathroom door and looked at me with her beautiful dark eyes, smiling sadly. “You have no idea who I am. I hired your pack for a job, and you guys are doing a good job. We had some fun. Nothing else.”

Deep, dark rage rose inside my chest. The wolf and the Alpha in me roared, wanting to push out of my human body and go for a run, feel the land under my feet.

“You’re right. It’s probably better to separate business and pleasure.” It took everything out of me to say it. How could I have believed that a woman, a Demon as gorgeous as her, could care about someone like me?

“Good. I’ll take a shower and get dressed. We should get going if we want to arrive in New Orleans tonight.”

Silver went back into the bathroom, leaving me standing there, naked and feeling like a fool. How was it possible that I still tasted her intimate flavor and had her on my tongue? She filled my chest, and my heart beat like crazy. I need to detach myself from this. I accepted the job and I’ll see that it’s finished.

No more pining for a beautiful Demon.

I didn’t want to hide from Silver. She asked to drive, and I was cool with it. Silver had arranged for a brand-new Mercedes Jeep for Drae and River. They followed behind us as she and I led the way in her cherry-red car.

I closed my eyes and leaned back, focusing only on the noise of the engine. Silver enjoyed driving fast yet River kept up with her.

Silver pulled off onto the side of the road and stopped. No one was there. I rolled down the window. It was silent and peaceful.

“What happened?”

Silver raced out of the car like a possessed woman.Can a Demon be possessed?I asked myself as I suppressed a smile.

River and Drae jumped out of their car, watching as Silver ran toward the field.

“What’s wrong?” River asked.
