I burned. My silver shield lit up as if to protect me from something. The Incubus whispered sweet nothings into the ear of his lover, making her breathe faster and push harder against his giving fingers.

My hand traveled to my nipple, and I started to play with it, making it hard as a pebble, while my other hand slipped inside my pants to play with my throbbing clit. I was a bad girl, but I had to cum again. There. In that alley listening to strangers fucking.

Just as I was giving myself all the pleasure I could derive from the play of the unsuspecting couple, I heard something like a crack and a scream. I opened my eyes. A large beast was on top of the Incubus, its teeth around the poor Demons neck. The girl watched in shock. She shivered and was about to scream.

“Run away and don’t say a word,” I called out at her.

My gloves were off, and I watched the creature that looked full into my eyes. Thick spikes that looked as if they were made of metal grew out of the creature’s back. The beast looked like a wolf shifter on damn steroids. What was it?

My gloves came off, and I summoned my sword with one move. The beast set on the poor Incubus, its massive jaws dripping thick, black drool dripping over his face and shirt. Some of the Incubus’ blood was smeared over the beast.

I placed one hand on its back, but the beast didn’t leave the Incubus alone. The Incubus was passed out, and I was afraid he was beyond salvation. What was weird was that, even though I pressed my hand on the beast, it kept biting and chewing on the Incubus as if that was the most important thing. Finally, after the fur burned away, the skin of the beast started to melt. It still didn’t notice me. It ripped into the poor Incubus. My innards cringed as it stuck its head into the Incubus’ belly, feasting on the organs.

As my hand burned deep into its flesh, the beast moved its sight from its prey to me. Its maw was covered in thick drool and blood. It had a mindless, feral look to its red eyes. Its muscles coiled. It was about to pounce.

I held onto my sword, ready to attack at a moment’s notice. It reared its ugly head and roared. I ducked and struck the beast fully against its throat. The steel of my sword is made of the strongest metal around, forged in the Pits of Darkness in Hell. The blade hit its neck and broke in half.

“Motherfucker, you shouldn’t be able to break my damn sword!” I yelled at the creature. Its eyes, red and feral, were now imbibed with madness.

The beast roared. I jumped back, ready to face it and lunge over it if needed.

“I won’t die in a back alley.”

The creature smelled wrong. It wasn’t the scent of a Demon or the smell of a shifter. It was off. I was too scared to consider it. Two more sets of red eyes glittered in the darkness. A low growl made me shiver. Another pair of beasts slowly emerged from the shadows.

Just as I was about to start wrestling with it, a caramel-colored wolf attacked off to my left. The wolf plunged its long, sharp teeth into the beast.

“Run,” I called to River. I assumed he was the wolf who ran to help me. I felt fear. Something was terrifying about the beast with deep, red, glowing eyes. Why didn’t I bring my car?

River ran and I followed him. We kept looking back, but the beast had lost interest and threw itself on the carcass of the poor Incubus. We stopped in an alley a few streets away from the club.

River shifted back. He looked gorgeous without clothes. I couldn’t stop myself from allowing my eyes to glide over his strong muscles and his naked body.

“Are you crazy or just trying to be difficult?” River yelled at me. His voice still sounded weird because his fangs were not fully retracted yet.

“Why are you yelling at me?” I was tempted to push him but didn’t want to risk my hair touching him.

“Because you almost got yourself killed, that’s why.”

“I didn’t. I was managing it.”

“No, you weren’t. You don’t stand a chance alone against an entire pack of whatever the fuck those things were. What were they?”

I shrugged. My eyes remained focused on River’s perfect abs. “I don’t know. They didn’t smell like Demons, and I was not their target. The wolf mutation went for the Incubus. How sad. He didn’t do anything wrong, and now he’s dead!”

I felt a pang of guilt because I couldn’t save him. He wasn’t dangerous, only feeding, doing what was natural to him.

“Silver, why are you here?”

“If you remember, we ran from those red eyes and wound up here.”

“Silver, do you work at being difficult, or is it a natural ability?”

“What the fuck do you want? Why did you show up?”

“I followed you, okay. I knew you were going to get yourself in trouble, and I followed you the entire afternoon.”

I shook my hair and looked River straight in his eyes. “I should probably thank you. But helping me is part of your job.”
