I poured soda into two cups.

I was tempted to tell him we were now sharing the same one, but it would only be making things more difficult for myself, so I didn’t.

“What’s your deal with Henry?”

The question had come from none other than Maddox. His ink-colored hair paired with his dark band T-shirt made him look like a handsome emo rockstar model, and paired with those startling blue eyes…

Yeah, the Hellhound nickname suited him just fine.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I put the cap back on the bottle but left the cups on the counter.

Maddox came closer to me, the kitchen thankfully empty right now, as he said, “I know about this whole ‘valet’ bullshit you have going on, but it’s not what I’m asking about.” He set himself in front of me, towering two inches over me. “What did you do to Henry that made him stop talking to you?”

Wouldn’t you like to know?

It was private. A secret kept between the two of us, clearly, because I hadn’t even told my best friends, to whom I told everything.

Not to mention not evenIknew why Henry had just stopped talking to me.

“It’s none of your business.”

“I’m his best friend. If you’re bothering him, it’s my business.”

“What if he’s the one bothering me?”

“I doubt it. Henry wouldn’t waste his time with someone like you.”

Ouch.

It stung. And the dick knew it did.

“Well, why don’t you ask yourbest friend, then?” Dry humor had thrown itself off a cliff, leaving only venom like I’d never used on anyone before.

Maddox’s eyes flared, glaring at me harder. “I don’t know what you’re playing at, bookworm, but I’m going to find out.”

I was sure Maddox meant the bookworm more as justworm, but I wasn’t phased.

“I’m trying to take over, actually, planning Henry’s slow demise so I can steal his fictional kingdom.”

He stepped closer to me. “I’m not going to fall for your little innocent act.”

“Good for you.”

“I’m going to find out.” His jaw ticked.

“Good luck with that.”

He took one more step toward me, our noses almost touching, his lips close enough to kiss—and bite. “If I find out you have nefarious reasons to do whatever it is you’re doing with Henry, you better know that I’m going to make you pay. And I’m not going to be nice about it like Henry.”

It sent a shiver up my spine. Because Iwasplanning something behind Henry’s back, even if I was trying to do it to help him.

It was still not Maddox’s business. Even if they were best friends. “I look forward to it.”

Maddox growled and left the kitchen, buttons pushed.

I let out the breath I’d been holding, and went outside to get some air.

No one was here, thankfully, the outside of the house quiet and peaceful, sky dark with dotted stars, only streetlights illuminating the surroundings.
