“I love you, Abigail Cooper.” He didn’t expect her to respond, knowing she was already lost to a world he hoped was filled with sweet dreams. His own eyes started to drift shut when he heard her whisper.

“I love you too, John.”

Twenty-One

“Why are you staring at me when I probably look like a giant mess of tangled hair and drool?” Abby kept her eyes closed, but she knew she was right. She could feel him watching her as she woke up, his warm hand stroking up and down the back of her arm. Her legs wrapped over him and she realized she’d slept amazingly well.

His chest rumbled with laughter. “Good morning, beautiful. And you are beautiful. Messy hair, drool, and all.”

“Mm, morning.” Her stretch moved the blankets around, cold air hitting her toes. She let out a small gasp and pulled her legs back up towards her body.

“How did you sleep last night?”

“Great. I don’t think…” She lifted her head off his chest. “I don’t think I had a nightmare, did I?”

“Nope. No nightmare that I could tell. The forest does wonderful things for our minds, doesn’t it?”

“I don’t think it was the forest that gave me the best night of my life.” She laughed as her finger traced circles across his chest. “I hate that we’ve got to go back to civilization after tomorrow.”

“No thinking of that right now. There’s a whole amazing day ahead of us.” John leaned down and pressed a kiss to herforehead. “We’ve got to have some breakfast, and then I figured we’d tackle getting our supper.”

“Please tell me you brought some bacon. I would literally give you my firstborn child for some crispy bacon and cheesy eggs.”

“You don’t need to give that up to me, baby.”

“Why not?”

“It’s already mine.”

She furrowed her brows. “The bacon and eggs?”

“Your firstborn baby. And your second… maybe a third or fourth if we are lucky.”

“John…” Jesus. That was sexier than it should be.

“Just telling the truth, Abby. I’m ready for it all with you, whenever you get to that point, too.”

Oh, she was there. She was so fucking there that the ache spreading through her belly was a weird mixture of desire and hope. She pressed against his shoulders, rolling on top of him as he fell onto his back. Her hips rocked over his already hard cock.

“Bacon and eggs first, and then more talk about babies.”

John groaned as she sat back on her heels before getting off of the bed.

“Wait.” She grabbed his shirt and pulled it over her head, loving the way his scent wrapped around her. “What did you mean when you said we need to get our supper? Are we going into town?”

“No. I have no desire to see anyone other than you this whole weekend.” Abby smiled as she shimmied into a new pair of panties. “Remember that little creek I showed you last night?”

She nodded, stiffing a yawn. “I hardly think that raging river can be classified as a creek.”

“Well, whatever you want to call it, with the storm that went through, it’ll be primed for us. I’m going fishing, and you can watch me….what did you say last night?Work my rod?”

“I should go for a run first. The road looked so quiet on the drive out here, I won’t have to deal with too much traffic.”

“Should?” John looked deep into her eyes, sweeping his thumb across her cheek. “Or need to?”

She thought about it for a minute. Did she? She would enjoy feeling her body moving, breathing deeply as her blood pumped through the body she was grateful for. But did sheneedto run?

No.
