“How are you feeling?” He groaned as he turned to face her.

“Like I got drugged last night, and then your daughter and mom walked in on us in the same bed like we were naughty teenagers.”

“Abby…”

“I’m fine. Honestly, I feel a little groggy, but I know you kept me safe. I should be ready to go in a few minutes. Is it going to be a problem for you to give me a ride back to my apartment?”

“You’re not leaving right away. Let’s try to get some food in your stomach and see how you do.”

“You don’t have to feed me.”

“I want to. And I want to continue the conversation we had from this morning when you came to my bed.”

“What did we talk about this morning?” John pulled his hand back from her face, worried about explaining everything he’d confessed to her last night, and that she’d kissed him, when she laughed. “I’m joking. I remember you making me promise to delete my dating app. I remember you saying you wanted to date me. And I definitely remember the kiss we shared.”

“You had me worried there for a minute, sweetheart.”

“I honestly can’t really remember everything that happened between the bar when I started feeling off and the nightmare I had this morning, but that kiss? Yeah, I don’t think my heart would ever let me forget. Do you think I could take a shower while you say goodbye to your mom and Katy?”

“Why don’t we get you out of bed and see how you do standing up for a minute.”

“Okay.”

His hand slipped under her elbow and the other found its way to the small of her back.

“How’s that?”

“I’m fine. I won’t take long in the shower.”

“Take as long as you need. I’ll put clean clothes on the bed for you again. Just please don’t lock the doors. If something happens, I don’t want to waste time breaking down a door to get to you.”

Her hand slid along his chest. “I’m starting to think you might like seeing me in your clothes. I could just wear that dress from last night again.”

“Not a chance, beautiful. You’re right. You look amazing in my clothes. And I definitely want you to wear them when we talk about what we said last night.”

“Thank you for driving me home.” Abby’s eyes landed on the sign outside of Sprinkles as John pulled his truck into a parking spot.

“Of course.”

Her fingers twisted the edge of the shirt she was wearing. Another one of John’s that smelled like him and had made her feel so safe the second she’d slipped into it. It helped that she’d also used his shampoo and soap, so now every inch of her was surrounded in his woodsy scent. He’d even let her borrow his windbreaker, and she was thankful for the coverage it provided to her neck.

“And thank you for taking care of me last night. I’m sorry I interrupted your night out with your brother.”

“Abby, I don’t care about that at all. I’m glad I was there. I’m really fucking glad that you were safe and that you’re open to exploring things between us.” He lifted her fingers to his lips and pressed a kiss to her hand.

“It was a rather unexpected outcome for the night.” Abby smiled.

“Hopefully unexpected in a good way.”

“The best.”

“Remember, I want you to send me that guy’s phone number.”

“Luke.”

“Right. Luke. Hopefully he was stupid enough to give you his real name.”
