“This is all because of that wretched girl.”

Her eyes fill with hate as she speaks, which fuels my anger. For someone who has done a mountain of wrong to an innocent girl, she remains unrepentant.

“Do you know what the consequences of this will be?” I say, addressing Mr. Kaye. My voice is devoid of the ease with which I spoke to him before she came out. Now, I’m beyond livid.

“So far, I have held back the facts about what she did even after poisoning Cassie with illegal blockers for decades and almost killing her. But now, with this, there will be no way to escape punishment,” I say.

If this were to come out and everyone among our kind found out about it, it would be the end of the Kaye family. There would be no one willing to associate with the Kayes. There would be no prospects for their beloved legitimate daughter. They would be ostracized and the news of it would spread through the werewolf community and possibly past that, especially since the victim of her assault is the White Wolf of legend.

Mr. Kaye sighs before he bellows, “Guards!”

The Kaye family guards within earshot rush to stand before him.

“Arrest my wife,” he says.

The guards are quick to do as he bade, grabbing a struggling and baffled Mrs. Kaye.

“What are you doing?” she asks, her voice shocked.

He doesn’t spare her a glance. “Take her to her room and lock her in there. She is not to be allowed out until I say so.”

“What? No, you can’t!” Mrs. Kaye screams as she is dragged away. “You can’t do this to me! I am the lady of this household! Get your filthy hands off me!” she yells, her voice carrying even as the guards put distance between her and Mr. Kaye.

Once again, he sighs, looking utterly defeated.

“Mr. Linds, maybe it is wrong of me to ask this, but can you give me a chance to talk to Cassie first before you go ahead with whatever you have planned?” He appears to have aged in the minutes that have passed.

I understand what he wants. It’s a way out for him. If he manages to reconcile with Cassie, everyone will see that he has fully rejected his wife’s actions, and she will bear the brunt alone.

The Kaye family will manage to avoid the ruin that awaits them, albeit not entirely unscathed. They will get a little heat, but it will be nothing compared to what would happen if they do not cut off Mrs. Kaye.

Looking into the older man’s blue eyes, I think of Leila. She has been helping Cassie for the past month despite being thedaughter of such an evil woman. The good in her has to have come from somewhere.

I sigh. “I can’t make any promises… but I will ask Cassie. I’ll see if she wants to speak to you before I proceed.”

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Jeremiah

“Focus Cassie. I know you can do it,” Leila’s voice echoes through Ares’ apartment.

Being a test dummy for the Kaye girls isn’t exactly how I expected my day to go. Honestly, I didn’t think this would be my life in general. Leila is sitting on the couch behind us, while Cassie and I are standing in the middle of the room.

I can’t help but let my eyes fall on her. I can’t get enough of her full lips, high cheekbones and the way her now white hair makes her blue eyes stand out. Her white brows are furrowed in concentration and it’s cute watching her try so hard to control her pheromones.

I’ve been blocking her attempts to attack me with a shield of my own pheromones, and part of today’s training is for her to try her best to sneak hers around my defenses. Normally, I would be no match for her if she were to use her full powers… but that is another aspect of the training today. She has to control the amount she uses so as not to overpower me with brute force, and she has to make sure I am the only one affected. She’s doing great so far.

The nearly two months of living together have been great so far. Eric and I have gotten used to sharing our lives with Ares, and we’ve also gotten closer to Cassie romantically.

I mean, we’ve always been very close, but our relationship back then was more friendly than romantic. Now we’ve gotten so used to being romantic with Cassie that we go on dates as often as we can.

Ares spends the most time with her, though. Since Eric and I have had Cassie for most of our lives, we decided to allow Ares to spend more time with her to get to know her since they’re mates after all. Well… allow is a strong word. He was very adamant. We just agreed.

Although our family unit is unofficial because we haven’t become official yet and Cassie isn’t married to us, it’s been going very well, and I am beginning to see this for us for the long term.

Being a family unit with Cassie is all I’ve ever dreamed of. When Cassie leaves a room, the air changes. The molecules rearrange themselves into something stale and listless, something only barely life-giving. I could drag in lungful after lungful of air and never get enough oxygen. Nothing is enough without her.

But now here I am, her pheromones bringing me the most relief I’ve ever felt in my life. Because she’s right here, beside me.
