“I know, you told me.”
“And you have an appointment with Carly.”
“Mmhmm.”
If she didn’t know any better, she’d say he rolled his eyes a little. But he just smiled at her, waiting.
“I’ll be fine. I promise. Go to work.”
By the time she’d got herself ready for work—ready meaning, she’d put on sensible clothes, some shoes and run a brush through her hair; William had done the dishes and was drying them.
“I’ll be heading off then?” she said from the doorway.
No answer.
“William?”
She came into the kitchen.
“Earth to William. Come in William.”
“What? Oh … Sorry. I was away in my head there. Yes. You’re going.” He leant down, kissed her cheek. “Have a good day at work.”
“I’ll try. I love you.”
He turned those bright blue eyes on her, and her heart hoped he’d say it back. No. The usual smile and a nod. “You too.”
