“At this time in the morning?”

It was William’s turn to let out a laugh. “Yep. My girlfriend just came home from work. I had a bit of a meltdown on her. All seems a little daft now, but I came out on my bike and ended up here. Try to clear my head a little.”

Easy silent moments passed between them. Her digesting what he had said, William thinking about Rosie and how he’d have to make this up to her in the morning. “Do they really have a sewer tipping into the river?”

“Well, not directly. It comes out at the estuary and makes its way here a little. There are some days you can see floaters across the top of the water.”

Dana screwed up her face.

“I suppose it won’t matter if you’re still planning on jumping, or we ….” He hesitated. “Could find somewhere that’s open twenty-four hours and grab a coffee? Don’t know about you, but my arse is numb and freezing.”

“Ah shit …” She sighed. “As long as it doesn’t turn out to be in KFC.”

“If it is, we can jump off the bridge together.”

She sniffed again and wiped her hands along her damp red cheeks. “I’d like that. The coffee,” she clarified. “Or maybe some vodka.”
