“You disappoint me, Rosie. At least we have Lacey and she has some sense about her. She knows what the family is meant to do and what we mean to each other. She knows what is needed of her and what is best.”

“Well, good for Lacey. Why do you need me? Sounds like you have everything you need right there.”

There was a muffled sound on the phone, like her mother had stopped it and then another voice came onto the line, a man, a deep drawled voice that made her stomach ache just hearing it. “Rosie? Come on now. It’s time you come home. We forgive you.”

“Forgive me? You forgive me?” Was he serious? After all that … She stared wide-eyed out of the window, but not seeing anything there. “Unbelievable.” She barked out a laugh.

“We can work through this. Your mother has found a good counsellor for you.”

“Really? Are you fucking serious?”

“Rosie?” Her mother shot. “Oh, it’s worse than I thought.”

“I don’t need anything from you all other than being left alone. Do that for me,” she said and hung up the phone. Her heart hammered so wildly, she had to press the phone to her chest. Her pulse pounded in her head, and she wished with everything right then that she and William could just pack up and go somewhere else. Somewhere where no one could find them.
