She tried to hide how out of breath she was. Why was that? She wasn’t the one doing drills.

Behind me, I could feel all eyes on us. I already heard the whispers about the frat party. But these guys had to see me as team captain. Rolling over for someone who I’d just met wasn’t team captain behavior.

"Six o’clock, on time." I folded my arms over my chest. "Where are you coming from?"

"What?"

I frowned. "Where are you coming from?"

"Where? Nothing."

"Did you sleep in?"

"Let’s talk about this later." Kassie shuffled something into her backpack between sentences and pressed her lips together. With a quick look behind her shoulder, she zipped up a pocket. "I had to grab something from the design office."

Something’s not adding up.

"They don’t open until nine," I said slowly. Besides that, I had her schedule saved on my phone, and I double-checked her artaccount before practice. "You’re not working in the design office today."

"You’re damn right I’m not," Kassie gave me a long look. "Thanks for telling them I could snap and go on a rampage. That’s exactly the kind of thing girlfriends love to hear. Real awesome on my first day for an internship."

"Well, it’s not a real internship."

She tried to ease past me. "Have fun with practice."

With an outstretched hand, I prevented her escape. "What did you do before you got here?"

"What did Ido?"

"I’m not asking again."

"I didn’t…" A blush colored her cheeks and it would’ve looked nice if she hadn’t been twenty minutes late to practice. "Ryan, they won’t let me do anything." With a sigh, Kassie fished the item she’d been hiding. She held up a bright blue flash drive with half of a frog sticker stuck to the plastic. "I just…downloaded a couple of programs."

"A couple of programs."

"Um…yes."

"From a closed design office?"

Kassie grimaced.

"Let me get this straight." I paused while one of the new additions to the team dipped a few feet away, notably trying to catch an earful. "Washington, if you don’t get yourassout of my conversation, I’ll have you running laps until ten."

All of my teammates are out to embarrass me in front of her.

Let That Shit Go

I rubbed my jaw until we were in the clear and dropped my voice to a mutter. "Youbroke intothe design office of Marrs University, signed into the computers without permission, copied some private programs, and, Kassie Ragar, you’re late to practice."

"Oh my god," she muttered.

Placing a hand on her back, I guided her through the narrow space between the astroturf and the training wall. "I need you on the bleachers. Silent."

"The bleachers?"
