“What do you mean?”
“Why are we unloading my stuff here?”
“Because you’re moving here,” Edge said slowly.
“Yes, to Irene’s house.”
“When did you change your mind?”
“Change my mind about what?” He wasn’t making any sense, and I wasn’t sure which one of us was confused.
“Moving in with me.”
“What? When did we even talk about moving in together?”
“What did you think I meant when I said I wanted you in Croftridge?”
“I thought you meant you wanted me to live in Croftridge, as in the same city, not the same house.”
“Oh.” He quickly hid his disappointment, but not before I saw it. “I thought you agreed too easily. It’s okay. I’ll get Ink to bring your stuff back out, and we’ll take it to Irene’s place.”
“Wait!” I blurted before I had a chance to think about what I was doing. “Are you sure about this?”
“Yes, but this isn’t about me. It’s about you. Are you sure? And it’s okay if you’re not.”
Surprisingly, I didn’t need to think about it. I didn’t have any feelings of trepidation regarding Edge. “Yes, I’m sure.”
He fisted my shirt and pulled me to him, covering my lips with his. When he broke the kiss, he rested his forehead against mine. “I love you,” he said softly.
“I love you, too.”
EPILOGUE
EVIE
Three Months Later
“Surprise!” we collectively shouted when Irene arrived at the diner.
“Which one of you came up with the idea to tell me a pipe burst the night before our grand opening?”
“That was me,” Dice said sheepishly.
Irene narrowed her eyes and pointed a finger at him. “No cake for you.”
“My apologies,” Dice said.
Irene stared at him for a few more seconds before she smiled. “See? It doesn’t feel good when someone you trust messes with you.”
“Are you mad?” I asked.
“Of course not. I mean, I could’ve done without the stress of the last thirty minutes, but this is definitely a welcome turn of events. Honestly, I should’ve known. You people don’t miss an opportunity to throw a party.”
“Only when there’s a reason to celebrate,” Phoenix said. “Congratulations on your new diner. It’s a welcome addition to our town.”
“Thank you,” Irene said and clasped her hands together. “Well, enough of that. Let’s have cake. There is cake, right?”
I laughed. “Yes, there’s cake.”
