Everything that had happened at the mansion still felt as if it had happened to someone else. She couldn’t really get over the way Night had come rushing in to save her from the demon, like some dark knight, protecting her and saving her life. Would he feel so protective of her if he knew why she had met his brother and what her plan had been for him?
Still was.
What her plan still was for him.
The air between them seemed to grow colder the longer they sat in silence, and she struggled to find a way to break it, to make him talk to her again. She didn’t like this oppressive atmosphere between them. It had her dangerously close to making him take her somewhere else, even if it wasn’t as safe for her. A rash decision like that would probably get them both killed.
Bastian was expecting them now. Night couldn’t take her somewhere else without it looking suspicious or worrying his entire family. Her coven was expecting her to be with Bastian too, carrying out her mission.
She couldn’t do it.
She wished she could be as calm and collected as Night as he pulled off the main road and the car rumbled along a narrow lane that wound through a forest, heading uphill.
Lilian flexed her fingers in her lap and then clenched them, focusing on her magic. She had managed to get the concealment spell back in place as soon as her power had moved off the red slash, and it was holding so far. Her magic was gradually growing stronger and as it did, she felt braver, her fear of the demon growing weaker.
Her fear of Bastian and what her coven wanted her to do remained as strong as ever though.
Night pulled the car to a stop outside an unassuming wooden house someone had painted in blood red and white.
Lilian pulled down a breath, suddenly feeling as if she couldn’t get enough air.
He looked across at her, a softness in his blue eyes that warmed her because it told her that he could sense her panic and her fear. She wasn’t alone. She would be as soon as Night discovered her reason for being with his brother, but right now, she wasn’t alone. He was here with her and he had said he wouldn’t leave.
Rather than hurrying her from the car, he sat with her. She breathed a little easier, gathering her courage and trying to vanquish her fears as she stared at the illuminated façade of the house. Night sighed and she glanced at him, catching the way he was looking at the house. Maybe she wasn’t the only one afraid of what would happen if they went inside that building—a building where Bastian was waiting for them.
Night looked as reluctant to see his brother as she was.
Minutes ticked past and neither of them moved.
Eventually, the door opened, revealing Bastian. How had she ever thought the two of them looked alike? Bastian was nothing like Night. The cold look on his face as he frowned at the car made Night in his worst mood with her look like a gentle kitten.
Bastian folded his arms across his chest, causing his thick black sweater to pull tight across his arms.
Night huffed and reached for the door, and she barely stopped herself from grabbing him and yelling at him to drive. He exited the car and said something she didn’t hear to his brother. Bastian spoke and gestured at her.
Lilian eased the door open and stepped out of the car.
“I will send a message to Antoine.” Bastian pulled his phone from his pocket and gazed down at it as he turned away from them and went inside. “It was good of you to bring her to me, Night. We may continue where we left off now.”
Night glared at him as he slammed the car door and followed his brother, but she saw the flicker of shock in his eyes and it rippled through her too. They were running from powerful demons and all Bastian could think about was claiming her as his servant. She shut the door and went after Night, wanting to catch him before he could reach Bastian.
She wasn’t sure what she would do if she managed it.
Make him take her away from his brother?
She curled her hands into fists. If she did that, her mission would be a failure. What she wanted wasn’t as important as what her coven needed. They needed to know who had attacked them. They needed vengeance.
And she had sworn to help them.
Night was already in the living room with Bastian when she reached him.
“I won’t let you have her,” Night growled.
Bastian swung towards him, shock flooding his eyes as he looked at his brother, his hands dropping to his sides and his phone forgotten.
He recovered a heartbeat later, his face darkening as crimson ringed his irises. “What did you say?”
Night took a hard step towards him. “I said I won’t let you have her. I know she isn’t willing, Bastian. I know she doesn’t want to be owned by you.”
