Elissa was a witch, one who had left Lilian’s coven a long time ago to strike out on her own, but she had also recently become mated to a man who was half-vampire and half-incubus. That made her the ideal candidate to help Lilian. Elissa might not have her magic anymore because she had taken demon seed—incubus seed—into her body, severing the connection between her and the earth, but she was still exceptionally knowledgeable, and she had been living with vampires at the theatre for some time now. She probably knew a lot about that breed and Lilian hoped it meant she would be able to help her buy Night some time while they worked on removing the poison from his blood.

And if Elissa couldn’t help her, maybe the vampires could.

It was a great plan.

Chapter 19

It was not a great plan.

Lilian knew it the moment the darkened glass front door of the Vampirerotique theatre slid open and the sandy-haired vampire on the other side took one look at Night and growled.

“Cristo.” The man’s dark brown eyes darted from Night to her and narrowed, a crimson corona emerging to ring his irises and his Spanish accent growing more pronounced as his expression darkened. “What the hell happened to Night?”

Lilian looked at Night, her stomach somersaulting and not only because he looked paler than the last time she had checked on him and there were shadows in the hollows of his cheeks. The vampire who had answered her frantic knocking knew him.

She was doomed.

Coming here had been a terrible mistake.

She could see it in the now fully crimson irises of the vampire opposite her as he stared at Night, fury mounting in his eyes.

“Tell me what happened,” he snarled and advanced on her, his hands flexing and causing the sleeves of his fine black suit to tighten across his muscles as they flexed. He looked ready to rip her apart if she didn’t tell him everything.

Not good.

Lilian struggled to keep hold of Night as he slumped, his knees giving out, and fear lanced her, spearing her heart and making it feel as if it was about to break. She looked at the vampire.

But she didn’t get a chance to answer him.

Apparently, fate had decided that thingscouldget worse for her.

An unholy roar rolled out of the open door on the right of the elegant red and gold foyer, close to the curving steps that led up to the second floor, and suddenly there was a dark-haired vampire right in front of her, his bright scarlet gaze searing her.

She tensed and gasped, and wasn’t quick enough to stop him.

He wrenched Night from her grasp and bared his fangs as he pulled him away from her, deeper into the foyer.

“Night.” Lilian lunged for him, her heartbeat going wild as adrenaline surged through her and the tattered shreds of her magic rose to her fingertips, coming to her aid as a desperate need to get Night away from the vampire blasted through her. He was in no condition to be handled so roughly.

The vampire who had taken him from her snarled and lashed out at her with his free hand, easily supporting Night’s weight with his other, doing a better job of keeping him upright than she had been. Lilian dodged backwards, narrowly avoiding the brunet’s claws, and focused on her magic, trying to calm her mind and stop herself from reacting.

Because lashing out with a spell would place Night in danger.

She needed to get him away from this vampire though.

Said vampire took one long look at Night, and a growl pealed from his lips, low and feral, and then he was pushing Night at the other vampire and coming at her as the sandy-haired male caught Night.

Her eyes widened and she backed off, heart pounding so fast that she was sure it would stop. Her head spun, thoughts blurring as blood loss, using her magic too much, and fear for Night combined to crush her strength.

Lilian chanted a spell anyway, willing to risk passing out in order to stop the vampire from harming her. She was no good to Night dead and he needed her help.

The brunet vampire roared and swung at her.

Night was suddenly in front of her, blocking the vampire’s blow with his forearm, and the male was quick to leap away from him, a stunned look on his face.

“Night,” she yelled as he dropped to his knees, hitting the floor hard on them, and she fell to hers beside him.

She gripped his bare shoulders, needing to check him over, but he snarled like a beast and wrapped his arms around her. She grimaced as he squeezed her against his chest, his body curling defensively around her, and growled over his shoulder at the brunet.
