In fact, she was about to make another one.

And this one might cost her everything.

She was tempted to slap the smile off Bastian’s pompous face, but instead spun on her heel and ran after Night.

She couldn’t let him leave. If she did, she would never see him again. He would go after Grave and Snow, and would fight the demons, and he would get himself killed. She raced from the house, desperate to reach the driveway before Night could turn the car around and leave.

She needn’t have rushed.

The Volvo was still parked where it had been.

Night was just sitting there in it, clutching the steering wheel and glaring daggers at the bonnet.

He didn’t want to leave her.

He didn’t want to leave her and he was fighting with himself, locked in a silent battle between departing and staying.

She decided the outcome of that battle for him, running down the steps to the car and opening the passenger door. He tensed and whirled towards her as she slid into the seat beside him, and then blinked, a stunned look crossing his face. Surprised to see her? She was surprised she was sitting here too, going against her coven and disobeying their orders.

Apparently, her desire for Night was stronger than her sense of duty to her family and she was going to take the leap.

And maybe hope that her coven didn’t disown her.

“What are you doing?” Night went to turn towards her, one hand leaving the steering wheel.

She grabbed it and shoved it back onto the wheel. “Drive. Please, just drive.”

Before she changed her mind and did the right thing rather than the reckless one.

She was going to get into serious trouble for this.

The heated look Night gave her said it might be worth it.

Chapter 14

Night’s blood was running hot, and not only because of his argument with Bastian—an argument that had made him realise how badly he wanted Lilian. He didn’t just want her for now, to entertain himself with for a while. He needed her for longer than that.

Lilian was his.

And she had chosen to leave with him.

That was the real reason he was on edge, barely able to concentrate on the road as he drove them back into the heart of the town. She had left with him, and now he felt as if he was in danger of losing control.

He felt wild.

Hungry.

Night parked the car in a garage a short distance from a hotel that overlooked the waterfront and stepped out. He breathed deep of the crisp air, using it to cool his blood and tame his hunger. Lilian exited the car and her scent mingled with the air, cranking his temperature back up.

“What I said back there,” she whispered and avoided looking at him. “It didn’t come out right.”

She was nervous. Why?

“Let’s just find somewhere to sleep and we can talk about it then.” Night closed the car door and rounded the back of it, opened the boot and grabbed the black holdall that contained his weapons.

She shut her door and came to him. He slammed the boot, locked the car and slung his bag over his shoulder. When they had settled in, he was going to teach her how to use a sword. He needed to know she could defend herself if the demons came after them. He was sure that they wouldn’t find them in such a remote place, and he intended to keep moving to cover their trail as soon as night fell again, but the desire to make sure she could at least effectively stab and slash to drive demons away from her if things went wrong was strong.

Undeniable.
