Vail bared his fangs at that.
Rosalind cast him a pointed look. “You were the one who threw him at the tree. You can’t really blame him for the damage.”
Vail gave her a look in return, one that said he was blaming Archer for the damage and that was final, and then he teleported.
Archer disappeared in a swirl of violet sparks just as Vail appeared next to him, and the elf growled and flashed his fangs again as he twisted at the waist and his gaze swept the garden.
Evelyn gasped as Archer appeared close to her.
For a heartbeat, she was sure he was going to grab her, but Fenix launched at him, slamming into his chest and knocking him backwards. Archer bared his teeth and took a hard blow to the face, one that had blood trickling from his nose. Fenix didn’t let up. He punched Archer again, knocking him off-balance, and when Archer tried to retaliate, he teleported.
Archer spun in a circle on the grass, twisting to face the other direction, breathing hard as he sought Fenix.
Her incubus appeared beside Vail and gave him a look. The elf nodded, a grim expression settling across his handsome features, and then they both teleported. They reappeared near Archer, one behind and one in front of him. Light burst from Archer’s hands and he threw the orbs at Vail, who cast his hand through the air and sent them shooting towards the clouds gathering above them. Archer grunted as Fenix struck him in his back, landing a fierce blow on his right side, and staggered forwards. He twisted and hurled a black orb with twisting red lightning arcing around it at Fenix.
At point-blank range.
Fenix bellowed as it hit him in the chest and sent him flying backwards across the grass and she gasped and lunged towards him. He disappeared just as Vail attacked Archer, raking claws down his back while he was distracted. Archer cried out and her heart hitched, the part of her that couldn’t reconcile the fact they weren’t friends anymore making her take a hard step towards him and flooding her with a need to help him.
Archer ducked beneath Vail’s right hook and shoved his hand against the elf’s chest.
And sent him flying too.
Fenix reappeared, looking worse for wear and breathing hard as flickers of red lightning chased over his shoulders.
Archer pivoted to face him, a grin stretching his bloodied lips, and her heart lurched into her throat as she lunged for Fenix instead, cold fear blasting through her as she sensed the malevolence inside Archer.
He was going to kill Fenix if she didn’t do something.
She froze, her entire body locking up tight as Fenix hurled himself at Archer, closing the distance down to nothing.
And kissed him.
Evelyn’s eyes widened as he slanted his mouth over Archer’s and she blinked, unable to believe what she was seeing even as the sight of it heated her blood in a wicked way.
Beside her, Rosalind muttered, “Mother earth… that’s the sexiest thing I’ve seen in a long time.”
Vail growled as he staggered to his feet and shook off Archer’s blow, and then froze too as he saw what they were all staring at. She tried to tell herself that Fenix was only using his abilities as an incubus to weaken Archer, stealing his strength through a kiss so they could take him down and stop him, but it didn’t make it any less sexy. She could feel Fenix growing stronger as he kissed Archer. She could sense Archer growing weaker.
Archer’s wide, stunned eyes slowly slipped closed and he relaxed, sinking into the kiss, and Evelyn decided Rosalind was wrong and that was the sexiest thing she had ever seen. The way Archer melted into the kiss, his hands coming up, edging towards Fenix’s hips as if he wanted to pull him into his arms.
Only Fenix broke away from him and wiped his mouth on the back of his hand as he flicked a look at Vail.
“Now!”
Archer blinked, confusion shimmering across his face as he stared at Fenix, his cheeks flushed and eyes filled with desire. It morphed to darkness a heartbeat later, his eyes blackening again as Vail launched at him, his claws poised to cut him down.
Vail slashed through the air, aiming at the back of Archer’s neck.
Archer disappeared just as his claws would have connected.
And reappeared in front of Evelyn.
She gasped, fear bolting through her as she stumbled back a step, sure he would grab her, but then he dropped to his knees, dug his fingers into his dark hair to clutch his head and unleashed a pained bellow as his body bowed forwards.
Fear crashed over her, not fear that he was a danger to her, but fear for him. She reached for him and stopped herself, told herself that he was a danger to her and everyone here, that he wasn’t her friend.
That he had been using her.
